Can an English-language song by an Italian band become an infectious worldwide hit?
And can that song be interpolated into another hit of its own over 20 years later?
“Blue (Da Ba Dee)” already proved that much is possible – this nonsensical ditty brought Eiffel 65 fame and fortune back in the late ’90s, and it proved to be just as much of a radio-ruler when reimagined by David Guetta and Bebe Rexha for 2022’s “I’m Good.” Now, a rising duo called Vertigo are testing out that formula themselves, seeing if they can breathe new life into 2004’s “Hit My Heart“ by the Benassi Bros of Milan by giving it an updated EDM beat and bringing aboard Makayla Phillips to sing the song’s chorus.
The members of Vertigo go by the aliases of Aazar and Capozzi. The former hails from Paris and is a longtime member of the group Point Point; born Alexis Duvivier, he’s worked on beats and remixes with several well-known artists, including the Chainsmokers, Martin Solveig, and David Guetta himself. Meanwhile, the latter is Italian-American and is based in Los Angeles, where she has been DJ’ing and producing house music over the past few years; she is born Jordan Capozzi and goes solely by her last name while performing.
Each member has a lot of respect for the other’s craft, yet they also managed to bond on a personal level before moving on to a creative one.
“For us, it was more the human connection that made us realize that we should work together!” they told Atwood Magazine. “Of course, we knew each others work and we love what each other is doing separately, but the human connection was the real reason why we did this!”
After deciding they wanted something musical to emerge from their new friendship, the two got to work on their debut single, “Hit Me Hard.” They envisioned this as a reworking as the two-decades-old hit by the Benassi Bros, with synth-heavy production that would replicate the EDM vibes of the original. The new track is also centered around the original’s central lyric, “Are you gonna break my heart? Are you gonna leave me once again?” Whereas Italian signer Dhany was the first one to sing those lines, this time around it’s California singer Makayla Phillips, a former semifinalist on America’s Got Talent, who does the job.
“To be honest, we didnt know if we would find someone that could match the energy and the emotion of the original song,” Veritgo says of their vocal invitée. “When we heard Makayla’s vocal we knew instantly that it was the vocal we needed! And, to be honest, her version is even better than the original.”
That might seem like a bold statement, but Vertigo knew they had something special on their hands just as soon as they first crossed paths with Phillips. “She sent the first take, she knew exactly what to do,” they explain. “It was a real pleasure to work with such a talented artist like her.”
Now that the track has been formally released, that pleasure is free to be shared with the rest of the world.
Vertigo encourage listeners not to resist the urge to participate.
“The chords, the synth, the emotion of the record gives you the desire to let it go and fall into the whole universe of the record,” Aazar says. “I personally still have goosebumps when im listening to this record. And when the beat drops, you want to go hard and lose yourself.”
Losing yourself in the music is no brand new instruction; no need to ignore it this time, music fans.
