The enigmatic concept of time offers it a unique position of creating both harmony and discord, providing too little and too much of itself, and being both villain and hero. Couple it with the notion of existence, and the fact a lifetime is a mere blink, it all becomes a little much. Yet, despite the ephemeral nature of life, lasting changes are made each day, changes that will last beyond one’s lifetime, and because of this, Dom La Nena wishes to bring forth a new wave of hope, one that will see a better tomorrow and beyond.

Todo Tiene Su Fin – Dom La Nena

On La Nena’s latest single “Todo Tiene Su Fin” (translated to “Everything Has its End”), that same hope she aims to create is felt with every pluck and stroke, and when it’s joined by the dulcet vocals of La Nena herself, a majesty unlike any other is born. This majesty is not totally new, however, as this singer, songwriter, and cellist has already done much with her own time, releasing Soyo back in 2015 with high praise. With “Todo Tiene Su Fin” marking the announcement of her upcoming album, Tempo, it’s already becoming clear that listeners are in for introspective beauty. Both the song and album share the message of time, something that has been unkind to her first home.

Como si el tiempo no pasara
(As if time did not pass)
Yo solo vivo de ilusión
(I only live from illusions)
Son tantos los sueños que tengo
(They are many, the dreams I have)
No caben en una canción
(They won’t fit in a song)

“Over the last several years, my home country Brazil has been burning,” explains La Nena to Atwood. All of the country’s natural resources are being destroyed at a frightening pace. The social inequalities are growing, the freedom of expression threatened. It feels apocalyptic.” Though everything comes to end, it doesn’t need to happen prematurely, and through the turmoil, La Nena sees that better days are possible. It’s through “Todo Tiene Su Fin” that these feelings and desires are channeled, and it’s done so with fervent passion, allowing the song to create a space of warmth and charm that will enrapture and inspire all those who listen.

The song’s beginning is an alluring mix of soothing vocal harmonies and plucks from the cello, setting a beatific scene that listeners would be hard-pressed not to immediately smile by. When the melodious croons of La Nena join, an ethereal feeling is created. Her vocals shine brightly here and provide further proof of the artistry she carries. Subtle cello performing in the foreground adds an additional layer that coalesces with the melody with extreme grace that aids in creating a sweet, fluttering aroma. It’s made all the more pleasant with her lyrical wit.

Todo un dia tiene su fin
(Everything, one day, has its end)
Todo siempre acaba bien
(Everything always ends well)
Antes de que todos se vayan
(Before everyone leaves)
Yo solo por amor
(I only ask for love)
Son tantos los sueños que tengo
(They are many, the dreams I have)
No caben en una canción
(They won’t fit in a song)

On the song’s themes, La Nena explains that “this song is a reflection upon the notion of ‘infinity.’ Over time, we have become an extremely destructive species that, at some point, may not exist any longer. Consequently, the concept of the infinite is quite abstract for us. But the Universe and its planets – including Earth – will remain, perhaps we will have been a brief “anomaly” within the immensity of the cosmos.” It’s above the welkin and into the cosmos themselves where this track lies; a celestial song whose delicate musings offer a moment of unfettered joy and peace, even if for only two and a half minutes.

The desire for positive change laced throughout “Todo Tiene Su Fin” creates a spark, one that can easily galvanize a crowd into wanting to become better versions of themselves, ones that can join La Nena in creating a more just, marvelous world for all. This first single is one of sincerity and beauty, and if Tempo carries the same majestic quality, 2021 is already looking all the much brighter.
