Gonna get real fit for the apocalypse. Gonna stay in bed gonna dream instead…

* * *

What does your personal apocalypse look like, and will you be ready for it when it comes?

Impulsive Hearts’ “Fit 4 the Apocalypse” isn’t necessarily about the end of the world as we know it – though it can be, if you want. Rather, the title track off the Chicago band’s recently-released third album is an all-consuming anthem of agency and raw reckoning – of navigating those massive, often unexpected changes that inevitably turn our own lives upside down and inside out.

It’s an irresistibly catchy, emotionally charged eruption of tension and inner turmoil, and a song that forces us to confront ourselves in an uncomfortable, but important way.

So are you gonna get real fit, or are you gonna stay in bed?

gonna get real fit
for the apocalypse
gonna stay in bed
gonna raise the dead
gonna fall in love
with the world up above

Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering the music video for “Fit 4 the Apocalypse,” a visual fever dream fit for a musical fever dream. Released this past April via Cavity Search Records, Impulsive Hearts’ third studio album Fit 4 the Apocalypse is the Chicago indie rock band’s boldest, warmest, and most ambitious offering to date. The group – led by singer and songwriter Danielle Sines together with Max Cohen on bass, Rachael Farinella on drums, Jess LeMaster on violin, Fallon McDermott on saxophone/keyboards and Adele Nicholas on guitar – eschew genre constraints and restrictive ‘boxes’ in favor of serving every song’s needs, meaning a ’60s pop-inspired tune like “Dreamboat” can snugly fit in-between the surfy, garage rock sonics of “Blocked U Back” and the angsty, visceral alt-rock energy of “Last Word.”

The album’s ninth and penultimate track, “Fit 4 the Apocalypse,” channels achingly intimate and vulnerable emotions into a dramatic soundscape marked by passionate verses, big chorus melodies, and spirited, singalong-ready refrains.

gonna fall in love
you wanna fall in love
‘Cause I don’t know,
but I still believe

I’ll be falling in love
I’ll be living

If I click my heels
3000 times

I was never yours
And you were never mine

“Filmed between Chicago and in the woods of northern Michigan, it was incredible to direct this psychedelic fever dream of a music video,” Impulsive Hearts’ frontwoman Danielle Sines tells Atwood Magazine.

“My lifelong friend played the bunny and chased me around the woods for hours to get the right shot! It was so fun to bring the video to life, and seeing the band’s vision like this was so fun. The song and video are intentionally left open for your own interpretation. We hope you can use it to spur your creativity and prepare for your own apocalypse.”

I, too, would think the end was here if I was being chased through the woods by a man-sized rabbit – especially one with such a big head!

But the end is not here – not yet, at least. “Fit 4 the Apocalypse” challenges us to think ahead about ourselves, and who we want to be. Are we fighters, or followers? Are we doers, or are we dreamers? Can we be both?

Intentionally open-ended though it may be, there’s no denying the passion, the energy, or the raw emotion pulsing through this song. Watch the “Fit 4 The Apocalypse” exclusively on Atwood Magazine, and be sure to listen to Impulsive Hearts’ third album wherever you get your music!
