From a bird’s-eye view, Canada sure seems like a strange nesting ground for Tucana.

Back home in small-town Ontario, the band had no one to play for except the neighboring livestock. As the story often goes, after migrating to the city and flocking around their local heroes in Metz and Fucked Up, these four young dudes found not only where but who they wanted to be. Crashing on the couch with a belly full of cheap spirits might not sound so appealing anymore, but their latest single still explodes with all the quiet desperation of a massive night out.

Unlike a Super Saiyan, Tucana don’t need an ungodly amount of time to charge. In a year where the scene at large is decidedly split over mosh etiquette, “Spirit Bomb” smashes into the fray with the reckless abandon of the Kool-Aid Man riding a wrecking ball. This band knows how to throw down. Frothy riff chugs spill over drums that rumble and tumble like a margarita mixer. Even when stopping to sit and bounce during the gang-chanted chorus, they never stop breaking a sweat.

“Spirit Bomb” isn’t purely a release, though. Amidst the half-remembered haze, alarm bells go off in the back of Tucana’s headbanging heads. Squalling leads peel away the warm veneer of corner store wine and Chinese takeout.

Chasing those cheap thrills might leave the band feeling like they’re going nowhere fast, though the mounting frustration only fuels their collective appetite for self-destruction. “Stop me if I go too far,” Bob Pavlounis shouts as if daring crazed onlookers in the pit to push him over the edge.

With a heater like this under their wings, don’t say I didn’t warn you when Tucana blow up.
