His new single “Change” is a perfect example of his ability to craft introspective and thought-provoking music. Written during a period of self-examination, the track wrestles with the uneasy feelings between awareness and action, and the discomfort of knowing something matters but wondering what responsibility comes with that knowledge.

As J.MYSTERY explains, “I was watching everything happening around the world… and I caught myself in that uncomfortable space of knowing I cared deeply, yet still feeling small and unsure of my voice.”

Having started from a simple piano and vocal foundation, “Change” gradually expands into something totally consuming, featuring spine-tingling strings that ooze with emotion.

In the conversation below, J.MYSTERY reflects on the collaborative process behind the single, the excitement of opening for Father John Misty in Portugal, and what listeners can expect as he steps into a new chapter of his artistic journey.

A CONVERSATION J.MYSTERY

Change - J.MYSTERY

Atwood Magazine: Congratulations on the release of your new single “Change”! The track seems to wrestle with responsibility and silence in the face of what’s happening in the world. Was there a particular moment or experience that pushed you to explore those themes?

J.MYSTERY: Thank you. “Change” really came from a period where I felt this tension between awareness and inaction. I was watching everything happening around the world, socially, politically, and environmentally, and I caught myself in that uncomfortable space of knowing I cared deeply, yet still feeling small and unsure of my voice. There wasn’t one dramatic event, but rather a build-up of moments where I asked myself: If I believe in something, why am I quiet about it? That question haunted me, and the song became a way to confront it rather than avoid it.

The song asks a difficult question about knowing you could make a difference but choosing to stay quiet. How do you personally navigate this mix of emotions between fear and action?

J.MYSTERY: It’s still something I’m learning. Fear is natural, especially as an artist, because your voice is so directly tied to who you are. But I’ve realised silence can become its own kind of statement. For me, navigating that tension means asking whether my fear is protecting me or limiting me. If it’s just protecting my ego or comfort, then I try to lean into action instead. “Change” was me choosing expression over safety. It’s imperfect, but it’s honest.

Sonically the track feels big and cinematic, whilst also very intimate. How do you balance creating something expansive without losing the emotional core of the song?

J.MYSTERY: The emotional core always comes first. I wrote “Change” on piano and voice very bare. If it didn’t work in that stripped-back form, nothing else mattered. Once the foundation felt truthful, then I allowed it to grow. The cinematic elements are there to amplify the emotion, not distract from it. I’m very intentional about space, even in big arrangements. I try to leave room for breath, for vulnerability in the vocal. Intimacy isn’t about size; it’s about honesty.

“Change” grew into your most collaborative piece so far, incorporating a string quartet and sweeping arrangements. What did those orchestral elements allow you to express that you may not have achieved on your own?

J.MYSTERY: The strings gave the song a sense of urgency and scale that mirrored the weight of the subject matter. There’s something about a quartet swelling behind a lyric that makes the emotion feel collective rather than personal. On my own, I can express introspection. With orchestral elements, the feeling becomes almost communal like the question isn’t just mine anymore, it belongs to everyone listening. That expansion felt important for this song.

If listeners could take just one feeling away from “Change,” what would you want it to be?

J.MYSTERY: Courage. Not the loud, dramatic kind, but the quiet courage to speak, to act, to care openly. Even if it’s in small ways. If the song makes someone pause and think, Maybe I don’t have to stay silent, then it’s done its job.

You recently announced that you’ll be opening for Father John Misty in Portugal this year. What excites you most about sharing the stage with an artist like him?

J.MYSTERY: I’m genuinely honoured. He’s an artist who balances wit, depth, and theatricality in such a fearless way. What excites me most is the opportunity to connect with an audience that appreciates storytelling and layered songwriting. Sharing that space, feeling that energy it pushes me to elevate my own performance. It’s also a reminder that there’s room for nuance and complexity in modern music.

If someone had never heard your music before, which one of your songs would you play them first and why?

J.MYSTERY: Right now, I’d probably say “Change.” It feels like a bridge between where I started and where I’m heading. It captures the cinematic side of my sound and the vulnerability at the heart of everything I write. It’s ambitious, but it’s still very much me.

With “Change” kicking off 2026, what else do you have in store for the coming months?

J.MYSTERY: “Change” is just the beginning of a bigger chapter. I’m working on a body of work that expands on these themes, responsibility, identity, growth, but also dives deeper into personal storytelling. There will be more collaborations, more live moments. 2026 feels like a year of stepping forward, with less hesitation and more intention.
