Moments can be fleeting, but their memories often linger.

We remember the people we met and more prominently, how they made us feel. Memories can drip with bitterness or sweetness or perhaps a mix of both. Our feelings are what fill the rest of the memory – where we were at, the music playing, the smell of the room, the sound of others chatting around us. Anthony Arya sets this scene beautifully in his recent release, “Sugar on Your Shades.” With a wistful recount of meeting someone in the city, Arya’s storytelling brings us right alongside him.

With influence from the classic folk rock scene of Laurel Canyon, Arya shines with his acoustics and raw vocals. At 16, Arya had his first national performance on NBC’s The Voice with a cover of Kenny Loggins’ “Danny’s Song.” He advanced all the way to the knockout round and built his music career right out the gate. After his time on The Voice, he completed his degree in Political Science at Stanford.

Arya, now 23, has a well-rounded resume. He participated in jazz bands, from the Stanford jazz combo to three other bands including the Anthony Arya Band, Chasing (Grateful Dead cover band), and Life is a Cabaret (swing-jazz trio). Arya also released four albums since 2018, as well as multiple singles.

With his extensive music portfolio, Arya has a clearly unique set of musical styles and abilities.

In “Sugar on Your Shades,” we get to see his talent in a different light. He began teasing the piece in March and April 2025 with Alameda’s Acoustic Session and the Squid Row Acoustic Sessions. Arya also previewed the song release in social media posts throughout the rest of 2025. “Sugar on Your Shades” is a beautiful showcase of Arya’s roots, influence, and natural talent. The stripped vocals and fingerstyle guitar bring warmth and familiarity to the listener.

His first verse introduces these feelings:

“Fall came around like an old lover
I was hoping I could see you again
Night’s getting longer, days shorter
Maybe it’s the way you been in my head”

Arya then builds into the chorus where he continues the story, how two people’s lives intertwine then separate in a moment:

“You call me in the taxi, you’re feeling low
Say you need a little time when the traffic slows
You’re working two jobs,
I’m working through things
Won’t you meet me in the middle
where the two halves meet”

The final part of the chorus resonates with a final reflection:

“Maybe it’s the city maybe it’s your head
Maybe it’s the things that I’ll say again
It’s the sugar on your shades
Baby it’s the way you’re lovin’
on me night and day”

The phrase “sugar on your shades” can be open to interpretation.

In certain contexts, I see “sugar on your shades” as an oxymoron. Shades represent privacy, yet also enhance one’s beauty and mystery. The idea of sugar then reflects what the person chooses to show about themselves. There is a sweetness and appeal; yet that’s not the whole story. The lyrics are pensive showing the personal allure and curiosity Arya has to the other; stating “take your time, take it off.”

Arya has longing to know the person on another level, yet it seems that their vulnerability is as fleeting as the moment. Arya continues to impress with thoughtful songwriting, letting the audience relate personal meaning to his words.
