Atwood Magazine is excited to announce a new partnership series, Sugar High, formerly known as The Tour Manager’s Guide, a podcast by Danny Carissimi featuring various musicians and industry professionals as they talk about their life and career. The next episode features Lucy Rose.
A couple months ago, I talked my way into the backstage area at Latitude Festival in Britain. Well, not entirely. I had a ticket waiting for me but it was in the trailer and the trailer was behind the gate. And the only way to get behind the gate was to have the pass. Everyone in our car claimed they were important and I think the poor lady working the entrance just waved us through. So if you ever want to sneak into Latitude, just say you are important. It works!
But after that things got even trickier. Lucy was in the “mainstage artist complex,” a completely separate zone with more security. After flashing my badge around like Wayne Campbell and walking behind some busses I ended up in the special tent. I walked by Leon Bridges’ dressing room and I can say with complete confidence that it is totally normal and it’s honestly kind of boring. Same went for everyone else.
But then Lucy showed up. Lucy is an extremely understated person. She’s not boring, she’s actually super smart and very witty but she’s so modest. Through email I’d figured out that she was going to fly on Mumford and Sons private jet that night. Obviously, I was intrigued, so I made the entire beginning part of the interview about that. However after a bit I realized she was actually so modest that it was making her uncomfortable and I switched topics. If I was on a private jet I wouldn’t be able to talk about ANYTHING else. ANYTHING. I’d have to bring a parachute because Mumford and boys would have my ass thrown out mid-flight. Because I would not shut up about the plane!
Sometimes you hear artists say things like, “I don’t do this for the money, or I don’t care about looking cool, etc…” and you’re like, “yeah, ok, uh huh” but Lucy says stuff like this and I totally believe it. She’s so sincere and such and ARTIST. And not in an annoying way. She’s an artist in a sincere way so much so that she can’t help it. Dude, she walked into Columbia records and said this, “I’m going to record a record, and there will not be one radio single on the whole thing.” So they just let her go. How kickass is that?
Either way, I loved hanging out with her and hopefully I get to do it again sometime. While it was annoying to get backstage, in retrospect it’s kind of badass and I felt like a commando.
