These girls only want you for glitter and gold, ’cause it’s hard to feel love unless it’s expensive…

Cool Girl Island’s latest single isn’t just an ode for all those who would rather stay in than go out on a Saturday night; it’s a ballad for healthy boundary setting and an anthem for avoiding toxic situations (and toxic people). Temptation and distraction is just about everywhere when you’re a young twenty-something; it’s all too easy to give in to your desires, but we inevitably lose a piece of ourselves in that process. Sometimes we can gain it back, but sometimes we can’t. A gentle, golden reverie, Cool Girl Island’s cathartic and dreamy “LA Lullaby” is an intimate, soothing anchor to reality in a superficial sea. It’s a beacon of humanity; a poignant, unfiltered look at that darkness that comes with living life in excess.

As she sings toward her song’s end, “LA is a joke – it’s such a joke, but so are you.”

LA Lullaby – Cool Girl Island
It’s getting late now
So rockabye baby
And rock me to sleep
All my friends
are out in the clubs again
Taking a shot or two
Living in blue
All you do is blackout on weekends
tell yourself that’s love
but maybe that’s the trend
fuckboi don’t need love

Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering “LA Lullaby,” Cool Girl Island’s fifth career single (out May 5, 2023). Following this past February’s brooding R&B slow-burn “‘do not disturb’ (airplane mode),” “LA Lullaby” is an enchanting intoxication (or rather, an avoidance of intoxication?) from an exciting up-and-comer on the indie scene. The musical moniker for London/Taipei-raised, NYC-based songwriter and producer Coco Lin, Cool Girl Island makes intimate indie electro-R&B music full of warmth, achingly visceral emotion, and subtle nuance. Her soul-soaked sound has already attracted thousands of fans to her music, with every successive release seemingly building upon the last.

True to its name, “LA Lullaby” is a sublime sonic daydream wrapped around the nightmare that is “superficial” LA culture: The cycle of excessive clubbing, substance and alcohol binging, emotionless hookups, and so on that often leaves folks empty on the inside. This is not an indictment on the city of Los Angeles, but more so it’s a critique – and importantly, a rejection – of a great subsection of mainstream American youth/young adult culture that has prioritized surface-level pleasure over deeper human connection.

Drown in your sorrow
then tell me you love me
then cry by the doorsteps
just cause you’re a lonely hoe
That’s why I rather stay home
Tonight
Your instagram
is probably the biggest scam
People aren’t stepping stones
that’s why you feel alone
no, I don’t wanna go there
fuck these new faces
now tell me, have we met?
these girls only want you
for glitter and gold
that’s all they know
Cause it’s hard to feel love
Unless it’s expensive, oh

The problem with this culture, and with this mentality, is that it’s everywhere. If you live in a major metropolis, you’re bound to encounter it – and if you’re in your 20s or early 30s, you’re likely to have friends who indulge in some shape or form. Avoidance is hard with something so ever-present, but Cool Girl Island’s lyrics make it surprisingly easy to steer clear of what, to her, is such an obvious storm full of trouble.

“‘LA Lullaby’ addresses the toxicity of club culture, including excessive drinking, false personas, and the behind-the-scenes darkness that often accompanies it,” Cool Girl Island’s Coco Lin tells Atwood Magazine. “It also explores the theme of falling in love with someone who is too deeply entrenched in the glitz and glamour of that world, surrounded by superficial individuals who are beyond saving. Ultimately, the song is about learning to let go and not becoming overly concerned with other people’s messes.”

That’s why I rather stay home
I’d rather stay home
That’s why I rather stay home
LA is a joke
It’s such a joke
but so are you

“LA Lullaby” is brooding in the best kind of way: Cool Girl Island immerses us in a lush dreamscape thick with glistening guitars, seductive keys, and rich, soulful vocal harmonies dripping with passion. “LA Lullaby” is ready to shine some light on your rainy days, but it’s just as ready to soundtrack your sunniest daydreams.
