Buoyant and bright, Carter Vail’s second single of the year is a radiant eruption of carefree, undeniable passion: Sun-soaked and sweetly seductive, “Nancy Again” soars on with dynamic beats, catchy lines, and charismatic, feelgood indie pop charm.
There she goes again
Nancy runs the sink
Drops her cigarette
Circles the drain
Cause heat falls around you
I swear it’s true
Released March 25, 2022, “Nancy Again” follows Carter Vail’s driving January single “Tappan Zee” – itself another wondrous song bursting with effervescent energy and sonic warmth. Currently based in Nashville, Vail and his band (drummer Garrett Fracol, keyboardist Andre Bernier & bassist Reed Gaines) have spent the past few years releasing a slew of singles (and the occasional EP) full of color, character, and clever, catchy songwriting.
Vail’s debut album Red Eyes is an excellent introduction to his spectacularly evocative artistry (check out “Tigers on Trains,” “Melatonin,” and “Death by Telephone”), and the four-track The Interstellar Tennis Championship is an especially compelling concept EP that, in the artist’s own words, blends “lo-fi, disco, indie rock and Bossa Nova to tell the story of a boy traveling to space,” and in turn explores everything from love and loss to growing up, and all the aches and pains that maturity brings.
Oil and water
Mixing through her veins
(I think you need it)
(I think you need it)
the Alka Seltzer
Slipping in her drink
(You’re gonna lose it)
(You’re gonna lose it)
Light curves around you
I swear it’s true
Fast-forward two years, and Vail is on the verge of releasing his second EP, with tracks like “Tappan Zee” and “Nancy Again” highlighting a particularly pop-friendly moment in the artist’s journey as a songwriter. His latest song glows extra bright, with sun-kissed guitars and percussive hand claps lighting the space around his compelling, emotion-filled vocals. He comes to a head in a heartwarming chorus full of levity and conviction – not to mention fiery guitar-driven verve:
I get so lost
You found me out
I’d never let you down
Just a little bit low
“‘Nancy Again’ is for long road trips and driving with the windows down,” Carter Vail shares. Stay tuned for more from the artist as he continues to unveil his upcoming EP, and for now, get lost in the blissful tones of “Nancy Again.”
No one can compare
Standing on the brink
(I don’t want to be)
(Better off without you)
The world has lost control
Nancy does the same
(I don’t want to be)
(Better I’m supposed to know)
But she stays golden
I swear its true, I’m rusted
I get so lost, you found me out
I’d never let you down
It starts to rain (I get so lost)
When she’s freaking out (You found me out)
