‘Wine/Weapon’ is a song about caring for someone through knowing the direction they came from, embracing vulnerability, and learning to trust.

* * *

Chicago’s Disaster Kid lovingly describe themselves as “nostalgia rock,” and after listening to their latest single, it’s no surprise why.

When it comes to his music, his lyrics, and even his emotions, singer/songwriter Seamus Kreitzer has one foot in the past and one in the present. This has been true ever since Disaster Kid’s debut single “Your Room” released in 2018, and yet it’s on the band’s newest songs that Kreitzer’s penchant for wistful reflection and schmaltz are at their height – and all to great effect. The achingly tender and sentimental “Wine/Weapon” sees Disaster Kid embracing love as an act of vulnerability and trust, joy and pain. They’re letting the light in, recognizing that they’re going to get all that comes with it – including a little darkness – and that’s alright.

exit the shower a delicate rose
dance in a towel
to a song no one knows

i look like a gentleman
i smell like a purse
i can be a drama queen
huge stains in my shirts
the cheek of my dad
more bark than my bite
holder your hand outside
the frank lloyd wright
chapters and doors
and inherited crime
i could find yours then
if you could find mine
love is a wine
love is learning your weapon

Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering “Wine/Weapon,” Disaster Kid’s second (and final) single off their upcoming debut EP, Rare Bird (out March 21st). Arriving on the heels of January’s dynamic and jangling “Interstate Runner,” the more subdued “Wine/Weapon” captures the midwestern indie rock band’s softer, sweeter side.

With Seamus Kreitzer at the helm, accompanied by Mason Stahl, Connor Criswell, Max Berg, and Andrew Tereick, “Wine/Weapon” is a cozy and comforting musical blanket; a source of soul-stirring warmth and candid, thoughtful reflections on what it means to love someone, and get all of them in return.

“‘Wine/Weapon’ is about embracing vulnerability and learning to trust,” Kreitzer tells Atwood Magazine. “Comforted by delicate guitars and tender harmonies, Wine/Weapon staggers between loving someone’s warm intoxication (Wine) and accepting their collateral damage (Weapon).”

“I wrote most of the song directly after watching an episode of ‘The Last of Us.’ The writing surprised me emotionally, particularly the themes of learning to trust someone.”

While their verses capture life’s little, heartwarming moments of intimacy, togetherness, and connection, Disaster Kid hit an emotional high in the chorus as, with rich vocal harmonies, they sing, “Love is a wine, love is learning your weapon.

It’s a message filled with depth and a hint of drama, and one that recognizes the complexity – and ultimately, the beauty – of loving someone. A truly soul-stirring display of “nostalgia rock” at its best, “Wine/Weapon” is a beautiful track full of raw emotion and authentic vulnerability, and the perfect song to share with that special someone this Valentine’s Day.

Just make sure to focus more on the wine than the weapon of it all.

from the edge of my bed
to the front of my knees
lay down your head
and i’ll put you at ease
heavy with you like some gauze on my leg
we pause and we play
we hit command save
when it’s your birthday i’ll write you a card
on the fourth of July we’ll sit on in my yard
i might mislead you, you might do so in kind
the fear of being open
the fear of being left behind
