Fuel the fire tame the beast
Let yourself feel the heat
Don’t be scared of what you need
Fuel the fire tame the beast
Black clouds roll overhead
The wind she gains her strength
Raindrops spit in my face
Here’s a storm I want to embrace

Released July 27, 2023 via Willkommen Records, “Adonis Blue” is a captivating, all-consuming enchantment. The lead single off Gatrill’s new album Come Swim (out November 24, 2023) offers a stunning reintroduction to the Brighton, UK-based singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist as she collaborates with Villagers’ Conor O’Brien to create a world of colorful sound that comes to life all around us.

“‘Adonis Blue’ is a rare butterfly, the males have brilliant sky blue wings with a fine black line around the edge,” Gatrill tells Atwood Magazine. “I spent the summer on a quest wandering the South Downs in the hope of spotting this butterfly. The track is about searching for things that are hard to find, but accepting that the quest itself can fulfill desires. It’s about the adventure, and all that we find along the way. Conor (O’Brien) is such an inspirational musician and it was an absolute honour to work with him on this song. The beat he crafted really weaved itself into the orchestration and his trumpet really makes the song for me!”

“I mentioned to Conor that I’d been experimenting with the songwriting process. I found that writing to rhythmic tracks sent to me by drummer friends pushed me to explore different types of song, rather than repeating myself or falling into familiar patterns and shapes with the harp. He sent over some really unique electronic rhythmic sounds and I wrote the song quite quickly to those. His sounds also inspired the arrangement – lots of clarinet, flute and violin parts all pulsating throughout – and after we’d put that together we sent it back to him in Dublin and he added some extra electronics and triumphant trumpet.”

Fuel the fire tame the beast
Let yourself feel the heat
Don’t be scared of what you need
Fuel the fire tame the beast
Wandering the fields for a glimpse of you
The beauty of an Adonis blue
Maybe this summer it will come true

The resulting soundscape the pair sculpted (together with Andrew Stuart Buttle on violin, Helen Whitaker on flute, and Marcus Hamblett on synths and production) is nothing short of magnificence: “Adonis Blue” grows from radiant roots into a multifaceted beast of sound – a gentle giant that engulfs, immerses, and consumes its audience in the best way possible.

As a beautiful cacophony grows around the ears, Gatrill’s lilting voice remains a beacon of light and knowing: She is the anchor keeping everything together, encouraging us to surrender ourselves to the miracle of life. “Fuel the fire, tame the beast,” she implores, showing us the way. “Come on, let yourself feel the heat.” This is what true catharsis feels like, all channeled into a song that’s ready to unlock the next levels of living.

Fuel the fire tame the beast
Come on
Let yourself feel the heat
Don’t be scared of what you need
Come on
Fuel the fire tame the beast
