Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering “Be There Shine,” the lead single off Fiction Non Fiction’s forthcoming sophomore EP (expected to release late March 2020). The principle project of songwriters Joey Barro and Brenden Salmon alongside Chris Good and Craig Welik, folk rock band Fiction Non Fiction released their self-titled debut album in 2015 and their follow-up Sun Up EP in 2018. Merging contemporary folk-pop and alternative vibes, the band range from sounding like mid-’60s Beatles and Beach Boys to heavier acts like Weezer, The Killers, or Stone Temple Pilots.
In other words, Fiction Non Fiction are still fishing for their sound, and we’re happy to be in the pond with them as they explore every nook and cranny of audio possibility. “Be There Shine” is definitively on the lighter side of this band’s output – a jovial, folksy romp through clearer skies and warm, sun-kissed days. Whereas the group’s new EP is by no means defined by this song alone, perhaps it’s best that “Be There Shine” serves as its lead single and opener — the song is fun and full of vivacious charm, which is exactly what the world needs right now:

Originally we went into the studio with four songs that we had been playing quite a bit,” Fiction Non Fiction tell Atwood Magazine. “Our process in the studio turned out to go very quickly. We sort of played live as a band for most of it, then ripped through some overdubbing. When we realized that we were ahead of schedule, I think Craig (bass guitar) had the idea to maybe add one more song to the mix. The song we had kind of been toying around with was “Be There Shine,” but I didn’t think it was necessarily ready to go. The next day we came in and hit that song right away without much of a thought. Sometimes it’s the ones you don’t think about too much that blossom the best, or the quickest. And that’s what happened. Once we had most of the song down, I knew that horns would be a great addition. Luckily, and in the spirit of how the song came about, we called some horn players that day, and within a couple hours they were in the studio with us. Everything just kinda magically came together that day, and went off without a hitch.
They continue, “Some songs click like that, and I’m never sure which song it’s gonna be. Maybe it’s the spirit of that song particularly. It’s lyrically just a simple song about not needing much at any particular time other than loving someone, or being loved by someone. Sometimes we can get in the way of ourselves, and usually all we need is simply someone to talk to or someone to help us realize everything’s okay. With that in mind, I think we came in with that carefree attack, and it allowed all the pieces to fall into place. I hope that freedom is what listeners feel when they hear that song, or all the songs on the EP really.”

Buoyant and smile-inducing, “Be There Shine” is elation in a bottle – a warm, homey testament to togetherness.
Fiction Non Fiction create a cheerful atmosphere full of good tidings and love; simple yet heartfelt, their song is a reminder for us to tell the ones we love that we love them, and to celebrate the innocuous everyday moments we have together, because those don’t always last. For those who are practicing social distancing and self-quarantining, may this little track offer you a breath of light and of love.
