Anticipation, subconsciously shaken, don’t vanish just yet – finished painting a whole life in my mind with you tonight…

It’s all too easy to get ahead of ourselves on matters of the heart: To close our eyes and dream of building a life together with someone special.

Maybe you’ve known them for years and something suddenly happens for you to see them in a new light, or maybe they’re a stranger you met in passing, whose presence in your life goes from nil to all-consuming in an instant. Our imagination knows no limits, and that means it sometimes gets the best of us, for better and for worse.

Fetch Tiger’s latest single captures the undeniable power of a crush: A glistening indie pop anthem soaring with sweet melody and aching emotion, “Psychosomatic” is an irresistibly catchy testament to the ever-present bond between our heads and our hearts. In the same breath, the Brooklyn-based British band tell us to never stop dreaming, all the while acknowledging how fragile some of those dreams can be.

Psychosomatic - Fetch Tiger
Psychosomatic – Fetch Tiger
Glitter roars
reflecting the light of the moon

Accidental run-in
Said the line I always use
Surprising jolt,
now master of every thought

Been so many years
Of running solo with the dogs
Pierced my brain, going insane
Psychosomatic pain
I’ll never change

Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering “Psychosomatic,” the fourth single release off Fetch Tiger’s debut album Walking to Camera (independently out March 15, 2024). Following last year’s well-received songs “Austin Powers,” “Fighter,” and “Fun Guy,” the spirited “Psychosomatic” sees the duo of Lorenzo Montali and Tanner Davis channeling pent-up frustrations, anxieties, yearnings, and more into one beautifully churning and charming musical indulgence.

Montali sings about a chance romantic encounter Davis had at a music festival, and all the ill-fated butterflies that followed. “Anticipation, subconsciously shaken,” he sings in a seductive chorus, his voice soaring with warm, love-soaked passion. “Don’t vanish just yet! Finished painting a whole life in my mind with you tonight…” Of course, that painting never materialized for Davis, as the man from the festival disappeared, never to return to his world – causing him to curse his “needless desire” and the burns it caused him, as Montali hits the chorus:

Anticipation, subconsciously shaken
Don’t vanish just yet, finished painting
A whole life in my mind with you tonight
A moment I’m craving, desperately craving
Needless desire causing fire
In my heart jumping guns
’til the end of time

Needless desire causing fire in my heart jumping guns ’til the end of time…

“This idea for this song came about reflecting on my first ever Glastonbury experience in 2022, meeting a boy in the crowd under what my friends call the ‘Tree of Life’ and sparking an instant romantic connection,” Tanner tells Atwood Magazine. “I felt this immediate, overwhelming sense of comfort and my mind jumped five steps and started thinking about what the future would be like together when we got back to London. Of course, I only ended up with me getting way ahead of myself and ultimately setting myself up for failure only to go on a date… and get ghosted. Those thought patterns have always left me disappointed in real life vs. the fantasy of what I see in my head, which never quite seems to come true.”

“This is our first articulation about a gay relationship in one of our songs,” he continues. “As someone who identifies explicitly as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, it’s been beautiful to share my experiences in this song and have a bandmate that supports and champions those stories. The trust we’ve built with each other is something that I do NOT take for granted.”

We only have one shared memory
Recognised warped mental chemistry
Sitting here alone in my room again
I try to fan a dwindling flame
Amidst the pouring rain
Forget my pride
I’ve numbed my mind in 1995

Musically speaking, “Psychosomatic” is a hot n’ heavy indie pop fever dream.

Jangling guitars, glittering synths, and driving drums douse the ears with a sense of space and wonder as Montali spills these tender, turbulent feelings out with a dynamic and spellbinding force.

“Sonically, we wanted this song to sound relentless – for example, the lack of any verses after the initial chorus – to symbolize those intrusive, excessive thoughts that can be ultimately damaging to a real-life relationship,” he explains. “Lyrically, our favorite line is, ‘I try to fan a dwindling flame amidst the pouring rain‘ – that idea of someone trying to light a match when there’s clearly no chance that it’s going to light, almost psychosomatic in a way.”

Anticipation
Subconsciously shaken
Don’t vanish just yet
Finished making
A whole life in my mind
with you tonight
A moment I’m craving
Desperately craving
Needless desire
Causing fire in my heart
Jumping guns ’til the end of time

Fetch Tiger certainly make their mark (and met their goal!) with this song, capturing a pain familiar to lovers, dreamers, and hopeless romantics everywhere.

The duo, who formed their band in London in 2020 and subsequently moved to Brooklyn, worked with fellow Brooklyn transplants (and Atwood Magazine 2023 Artist-to-Watch) TOLEDO, AKA Daniel Alvarez and Jordan Dunn-Pilz, to produce and mix “Psychosomatic” and the rest of their debut album. For them, this upcoming record is the truest snapshot of who they are, both as artists and as individuals.

“In our two EPs, a majority of our songs were written through the POV of made-up characters and situations. So with this debut album, we wanted to step out from behind these characters and tell stories about our own, real, tangible experiences,” Fetch Tiger explain. “We might eventually get back to hiding behind those more fictional storylines, but we wanted this first LP to reflect us in a way that felt challenging and upfront.”

Unapologetically autobiographical and nonetheless enchanting, Walking to Camera is set for release on March 15, 2024. Stay tuned for Fetch Tiger’s striking debut album, and for now get lost in the displaced passion and soul-stirring sweetness of their latest single “Psychosomatic,” streaming exclusively on Atwood Magazine!
