And it feels like there’s something missing, ever since you went away…

Heartbreak is, for better or worse, timeless.

Whether you’re the one doing the breaking up, or the one being broken up with, all roads ultimately lead to the same end: Single and alone, we pick up the pieces of our lives and must find a way to move on. Where once we were one of two, we are now one of one; we have to be our own rock, our own guide, our own protector, our own savior. British singer/songwriter KIANJA reckons with feelings of loss after a breakup on her soul-stirring new single “Ever Since You Went Away,” an intimate eruption of heartache and grief wrapped in breathtaking R&B. Irresistible, deeply evocative, and painfully relatable, this song is an instant classic from an up-and-coming artist on her way to becoming the next big name in modern soul.

You were the ground that I walked on,
holding me down, you were my rock.
Darling I’ve pulled the rug
from right under my feet.

All of the pain you washed away,
deep in your water I was safe.

Now the tide, it takes me way out of your reach.
As if it wasn’t hard enough just living.
Now I gotta make it on my own every decision.
And it feels like there’s something missing.
Ever since you went away.

Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering “Ever Since You Went Away,” KIANJA’s first release of 2023 and the lead single off her forthcoming third EP (following 2019’s Glory and 2020’s In a Different Light). One of East London’s brightest talents, KIANJA has come into her own over the past five years as a powerhouse of emotion, classic R&B, and dazzling soul, luring listeners in only to break us down and build us back up again stronger than we were before. In covering her 2021 standalone single “Place for Me,” Atwood Magazine praised her for taking “an all-too familiar kind of turmoil and restlessness, and turning them into a space of serene reflection and peaceful thought.”

Whether she’s singing about love, its absence, or everything in-between, KIANJA has an uncanny ability to stop listeners dead in our tracks, tugging at our heartstrings while tapping something deep down inside – and that’s exactly what she’s done in “Ever Since You Went Away,” whose raw and emotional performance easily cements her as one of 2023’s artists to watch.

You were a feather on my wings.
Don’t know if I’ll ever fly again.
When I need a savior,

You were my angel in disguise.
I’m not your responsibility
I love you enough to set you free.
I gotta learn to be without you by my side.

Maybe it’s a memory of a particularly hard breakup; maybe you’re going through one right now. Or maybe it was a moment some weeks or months after that breakup, and some action or experience made you stop and realize that, simply put, you were all you had. The breakup is the shock, but it’s the events in its aftermath that trigger us. Whereas you might have once relied on your partner for support or companionship in some activity, it’s those little things later on that remind you that they are no longer with you, and you are no longer with them; you are alone.

As if it wasn’t hard enough just living, now I gotta make it on my own every decision,” KIANJA sings in the song’s beautiful chorus. “And it feels like there’s something missing ever since you went away.” Raw heartache lingers with KIANJA as she laments her present circumstances in a breathtaking, shiver-inducing, and instantly memorable upheaval of her heart and soul.

“I had to leave someone I loved but wasn’t in love with, the only man who ever gave me stability,” KIANJA says of her new song. “I had to deal with the fact that I couldn’t lean on him or call for help anymore. The penny fully dropped when I wrote this song, that I would have to face everything on my own again.”

And it’s all hitting me now like a ton of bricks.
Oh the way you slipped right through my fingertips.
And I feel like such a fool for jumping ship.

Oh I guess I’ve gotta get used to the way it is.
