Love is a delicate, beautiful beast; there’s no way to “tame” it, and no way to “own” it, but if we’re lucky enough to find love and nurture that feeling, it might just stick around. Singer/songwriter Kate Prascher’s latest single is a reflection on love’s sweetness, its wondrous depth, and raw complexity: A heartfelt folk song of intimacy, connection, growth, and letting go, “The Island” aches with the weight and warmth of love as Prascher explores the nuances that often go unseen.

I will go wherever you go,
I will lead whenever you follow.
I will go, I will go far away.
When the night is cold and gray,
Then you ask if I can stay,
And you lay a sweet old pallet on your floor.

Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering “The Island,” the second single taken off Kate Prascher’s forthcoming debut album, Shake the Dust (independently out August 30, 2024). A New York City-based singer/songwriter by way of Memphis, Tennessee, Prascher is an up-and-coming name in the contemporary bluegrass circuit, her songs a mix of sweet folk dust, red dirt, and Appalachian light. “The Island” is an especially gentle track, pulled from the artist’s family history as well as her own encounters with love, loss, and life’s inevitable changes.

Neither you or I
is any younger than we were,

All the things we’ve tried
have left a mark.

“A few years ago, I got a rangy 1960s Gibson LG-0, brought it back to my Brooklyn apartment and played a riff that would become ‘The Island,'” Prascher tells Atwood Magazine. “I went home to Memphis shortly after and found myself reflecting on my mom and dad, who divorced decades ago, but have thrived in their second marriages.”

“I realized such a tenderness for their jumps of faith. Despite how easy it is to be alone. The lyrics came from them, from my pilgrimage to Prince Edward Island the same summer, and a few words borrowed from the book of Ruth.”

Now the island is drawing closer in,
And I’ll meet you there after I can swim.
And the creaking on the porch,
When the vane is pointing North,
I swear I hear your footsteps on the stairs.
