“make it make sense” (stripped) – Sarah Katherine Lawless ft. Ava McCoy

This ballad starts with harmonized humming, like conjuring a memory of several seasons past.

The original, 2024’s “make it make sense” was more of a rain-drenched sidewalk in the moments after a storm. The recently released “make it make sense (stripped)” feat. Ava McCoy is a softer approach, on the cusp between seasons which recalls the past. The hot, muggy anger has evaporated from the air leaving stripped vocals, balanced by fresh perspective, aligned with a new voice. In that way, “make it make sense (stripped)” feels like something close to closure, looking back on a summer fling gone sour, almost grateful for the missed connection.

‘Cause you were assuming
That I was through coping
And off and away with another

Not to reveal too much about the side of the internet I am on, but these lyrics belong in a Conrad Fisher (of The Summer I Turned Pretty) edit. It is frustration that has given itself completely to yearning. Confessional, this version sounds like regret in retrospect. There is a distance apparent in this version, the sadness that follows anger. More wistful, remembering how heavy the feelings once were. Ava McCoy sings:

We’re newly found rivals
so I’ll play the menace
And you can go kindly f* off

And suddenly Sarah Katherine Lawless is not alone in the feeling. Lawless joins McCoy for the final line, and we feel that the old bitterness is not difficult to access:

But you give and take
Oh my god! Get away from me
You can head straight back to hell

Capturing the universality of a situationship, this track translates the “disappointed but not surprised” feeling.

This giving and taking away of attention and affection is infuriating, but at a distance it reveals how unsuited the ex-lovers are for each other. It is a shift from pointing fingers, placing blame, to a hard-fought acceptance.

We walked the plank
And you sank but I swam to the top
And away so I thank you

These lines accompanied by the acoustic sound seem to capture the ultimate feeling this version translates: A complicated detachment, a bitterness blurred by time.
