Sydney-based soul artist Natalie Slade introduces fans to her upcoming Molasses album with a spell.

Unquenchable Craving,” the first taste of her collaboration with producer/arranger Sampology, blends future soul and broken beat into something nearly spiritual – a pulsing momentum in her bones but not so strong that she can leave all of her worries behind.

A glimmering synth loop kicks things off, subtle and sharp like light bouncing inside cut glass. After a short, blippy intro, everything blooms. Wide grand piano chords anchor the mids and lows, and a lively drum kit pops with messy and magnetic energy. It’s hard to call a beat that feels so alive “broken” but this is definitely a bit of scattered-meets-soothing broken-beat brilliance. As our songbird starts to sing, it feels like she’s reaching for something floating high near the ceiling. It’s operatic in a way.

Slade’s voice shifts depending on the moment. On the hook, she floats in soprano with air in the belly of the notes. There’s a kind of cinematic release in the way she sings, “It’s no wonder we’re praying, unquenchable craving.” It feels devotional and lands like something borrowed from spirit work.

But the verses come in sharper. Her tone, clipped and rhythmic, drops down and touches bare skin to dirt. “Sugar sex, credit cards, go to sleep, wake up hard.” The cadence pulls from spoken word and old-school hip-hop, wrapped in a message about addiction, materialism, and the endless itch to feel full.

Directed by Dominique Berns, the “Unquenchable Craving” music video keeps it simple: Color muted. Slade walks down city sidewalks straight towards the camera. Her outfits and surroundings shift quickly like scenes in a movie being fast-forwarded. It feels like time’s moving, but she also looks as if she’s stuck in a loop.

The structure of “Unquenchable Craving” moves in waves. The keys and strings crest and melt away at the song’s halfway point – giving space for a central prayer to fill the room. Then the beat comes back leaner, more pointed. And the final chorus doesn’t just repeat – it rises with a single violin swell and everything starts to burn brighter.

Then it all melts away – clean, sudden – and you’re left with your hands open, still craving another minute to sit inside what just slipped through your fingers.
