The month of June means many things to many people, from the true start of summer to the year’s halfway point. It’s a month promising sunshine and fun, and for the LGBTQ community, it’s a time to celebrate Pride. Now more than ever, Pride Month is characterized by an increase in queer visibility through parades, curated content and rainbows everywhere.

Unfortunately, all that excitement is starkly juxtaposed by the hate crimes and injustice still going on in our community at a systemic and interpersonal level. It feels equal parts hopeless and infuriating, but it should also make us realize just how important it is to band together and stay strong. It’s imperative to remember what Pride represents at its core – queer liberation and a rejection of harmful norms. We must remember that our ancestors started this liberation with an internal fire and force they refused to quell, and music has always been an integral part in that.

Queer artists have always existed, but they’ve never been more visible than in 2019. Today, LGBTQ identified artists are holding nothing back and showing us just how important it is to be true to oneself. From King Princess and MUNA to Troye Sivan, Kim Petras and MNEK, queer artists are breaking all the molds and celebrating loud and proud all year long. Still, it’s so exciting to have a dedicated month to blast all the incredible music being made by and for queer individuals, and Atwood Magazine wouldn’t dare miss it!
