I believe it was Pliny the Elder who’s credited for the phrase, “Home is where the heart is.” It’s one of the oldest, well-worn sayings of human history – a time-tested and mother-approved sentiment that speaks not only to place, but also to people and purpose. Our sense of self is derived from so many factors, and in his new song and video, Swedish-Greek singer/songwriter Plàsi explores and uncovers his own home. A beautiful, feel-good expression of self-discovery and finding your purpose, Plàsi’s “Where I Belong” offers an intimate indie folk exploration of one person’s search for their home in the world – a search we can all relate to, no matter who we are and not matter where we are.

Where I Belong – Plàsi
Memories, are you what I believe?
Prejudice, you are bigger than you seemed
Emptiness, you make it hard to speak
Loneliness, are you the one I seek?
Searching peace, in my heart and my soul
Somewhere else, or will you be my home?
Is this where I belong?

Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering the music video for “Where I Belong,” the title track off Plàsi’s brand new EP of the same name (released May 29, 2020 via Nettwerk Records). Based in Stockholm, Mikael Bitzarakis (a.k.a. Plàsi) has been lighting up our lives since his first songs graced our ears in 2015: From the serene whistles of “Now & Then,” to the haunting performances across 2018’s debut album People, to the cathartic bursts of warm acoustic throughout Where I Belong, Plàsi’s songwriting and production place him at the forefront of modern singer/songwriters, alongside such artists like Henry Jamison, José González, and so on.

Tenderness, I saw you way too late
Endlessness, I think you’ll be my fate
Finding peace, in my heart and my soul
You’re just there with the music I love
The place where I belong

A gorgeous and lilting five-track, fifteen-minute experience, Where I Belong begins its journey with the moving, intimately catchy title track. Stunningly sincere and emotionally raw, “Where I Belong” “describes how I rediscovered the passion I thought I had lost,” Plàsi explains. “After years of an endless search for the right answer I realized it was lying next to me, closer than I had ever dared to look before.” The EP as a whole captures the artist’s story of finding his way back to his love; his purpose; his passion; his home. “I bought myself a new guitar to see if I still felt the connection, and with a higher intensity than ever before I got drawn back to where it all started as a kid. Surrounded by music. Where I belong.”

For his new music video, Plàsi compiled scraps from his aforementioned journey to create a sort of visual scrapbook – a diary of a life lived. “‘Where I Belong’ is about finding back to your passions, that you knew you always had but lost along the way towards other obligations in life. It’s about daring to look into yourself and back to when you were young, when time didn’t matter and you spent your days on things that gave you energy. For me that journey has been about getting music back into my life, that I was very close to losing but luckily managed to find again. The video was filmed during a tour last fall around Europe, where me and my producers/musicians made a break for a few days in the Julian Alps of Slovenia to set up a remote studio and produce the new EP. It captures a journey from the busy city life and heavily trafficked motorways where it’s so easy to get lost, to the untouched mountain area just a few hours away where inspiration and rest came naturally to me. A journey from denial and distress to reconnecting to one’s purpose in life.”

For many of us living in lockdown, “Where I Belong” harkens back to a time where we could feel free to be around our loved ones; it reminds us of how special it is to spend time together and share in life experience. More broadly though, the video offers a special lesson – the story of that all-important journey into the self. It’s a journey each of us has inside ourselves – maybe some of us have already embarked on it once before; regardless, we’re all nomads in search of our respective homes, and there’s so much to be gained from us discovering where we belong.
