Back in 2020, when the world had just shallowly entered the pandemic, LA-based alt-rock band Wallows covered “With a Little Help From My Friends” as a fundraiser for Feeding America. Originally sung by Ringo in 1967, “With a Little Help From My Friends” has become something of a right of passage for many a band’s drummer. So it’s not unexpected that Wallows’ take on the old classic was sung by their drummer, Cole Preston.

Perhaps less expected is that “Quarterback,” the band’s brand new track, is also sung by Preston. Answering the prayers of many fans who wanted to see the trio’s drummer back on the mic, “Quarterback” (released February 15 via Atlantic Records) is the first Wallows original where Preston graces us with his vocals.

Quarterback - Wallows
Quarterback – Wallows
I’m anxious, pacin’
Thoughts are racin’
Is this over?
Why won’t you call my number?
You said “I’ll be alright”
I knew by the look in your eyes
But anytime you want you know I’ll be the one
Do you feel the same or was it just for fun?
‘Cause summer’s gone
I’m alone wishin’, for your call, startin’ to freak
I’m not sure if he’s comin’ over for the night
Quarterback’s fine
Summer’s gone
I’m alone wishin’, for your call, startin’ to freak
I’m not sure if he’s comin’ over for the night
Quarterback’s fine

Blending buoyant backbeats with brash vocals, “Quarterback” serves as something of a hybrid, transcending Wallows’ past discography. It offers that silky smooth synth you’d find on a track like 2019’s “Are You Bored Yet?” – or perhaps even hear on a Goth Babe song – but its syncopated, punching chorus seems more in line with “Nobody Gets Me (Like You)”, “Talk Like That”, and some of their other more recent releases. In other words: no matter what type of Wallows track is your favorite, “Quarterback” has something for you.

Though “Quarterback” only dropped this past Monday, it’s really just a piece of an even larger release: Remote (Deluxe). A deluxe version of the trio’s 2020 EP, Remote (Deluxe) came out yesterday, and it featured even more new music. Beyond the EP’s original six singles – which were recorded remotely as a coast-to-coast quarantine creation – Remote (Deluxe) also has “Quarterback”, the 2020 non-album single “OK”, and two other brand new tracks: “Another Story” (a brief, ethereal song) and “On Time” (think old-school Twenty One Pilots meets the outro from Some Nights’ “Stars”).

Spotlights, burn down
I’m left with my doubts
Yeah we’re done, but what for?
I don’t play for a team sport
You said “I’ll be alright”
I knew by the look in your eyes
But anytime you want you know I’ll be the one
Racin’ to your door even against the odds
But now
Summer’s gone
I’m alone wishin’, for your call, startin’ to freak
I’m not sure if he’s comin’ over for the night
Quarterback’s fine
Summer’s gone
I’m alone wishin’, for your call, startin’ to freak
I’m not sure if he’s comin’ over for the night
Quarterback’s fine

It’s safe to say that it’s a great time to be a Wallows fan. Listen to “Quarterback” below, and make sure to check out all of Remote (Deluxe)!
