Euphoria seems to be an unusual feeling to fixate upon during the tumultuous year of 2020, but on her solo debut “Lifetime”, Romy (Madley-Croft, of The xx) has chosen to focus on the brighter side of life. Taking the dance music tendencies and heightened sentimentality that already permeates The xx and leaning into a poppier sound, “Lifetime” sounds like a loved up rave that seems like a reality far, far away from the one we’re living in now.
Oh, this is a high that I can’t get from nobody else
You know I’ll never let this feeling go to waste
No, oh, no, no way
This must be a love from a higher place
Closing my eyes and I still know the taste
The touch of your skin when the sun hits your face
An dance-fuelled infatuation, that’s what Romy’s living and describing as she travels through the night. It’s pure ecstasy, the kind of experience that makes you feel like you’re floating in another dimension because nothing that happens on this Earth can ever be so good. A sensory explosion that turns love into a very specific taste, touch, and sound.
And if you’re ever lonely
If you can’t find the way
If this world comes to an end
I wanna be there with you
Once in a lifetime (You’ll be right beside me, I’ll be right beside you)
(You’ll be right beside me, I’ll be right beside you)
Once in a lifetime (You’ll be right beside me, I’ll be right beside you)
(You’ll be right beside me, I’ll be right beside you)
Apocalyptic references have become extremely on-brand, but there’s nothing quite as remarkable as loving someone so much you’re willing to go to the end of the world with them. It’s the kind of surrender that’s normally reserved to ballads only, but Romy has always been an expert at turning vulnerability into something you can dance to, and with her solo work it seems to be no different.
And once in a lifetime something matters
I wanna tell you this matters to me
It’s never the right time
So just let it happen
Oh, let it happen
Finally, there’s the release. The realisation that you’re in something for the long haul and the best thing to do is just to let go, just like you let yourself go in a sweaty club, the way you let yourself fall head over heels into love even though it’s scary and it might end in pain or a horrible hangover. Leaning into joy for the moment is worth it, even if that moment only happens once in a lifetime.
