Indie pop duo Roses & Revolutions capture the feeling of being stuck in limbo with their aching new single “i don’t have feelings anymore.”

What about when you’re in the middle – when things are fine, when you don’t have a reason to feel up or to feel down so you just feel – there… Stuck in a numbness without knowing what to do to get yourself out of it, only knowing that you need something to shake you free.
Indie pop duo Roses & Revolutions decided to give us a song for this state: Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering “i don’t have feelings anymore,” the latest track off Roses & Revolutions’ upcoming EP Under the Spell (out April 17, 2020 via Nettwerk). Hailing from Rochester, New York, Roses & Revolutions consists of Alyssa Coco along with longtime collaborator Matt Merritt, and have been weaving their spellbinding sound across the country for the better part of five years now.
“i don’t have feelings anymore” says it all: This is a feeling that has deserved a song for far too long, because it is so important to know in these limbic moments, we are not alone. Frontwoman Alyssa Coco puts it best when describing their new single, “‘i don’t have feelings anymore’ is a song we wrote about feeling numb, which to us, is much worse than feeling sad, angry, or upset. It’s better to feel something than nothing. When you’re numb and don’t feel anything at all, you find yourself in a weird purgatory that’s really hard to recover from.”
The song begins with simple, tone-setting, piano notes. Coco’s delicate and vulnerable vocals cut in,

A slow build with light guitar plucks and layered piano chords seem to be leading us to a culmination before halting to the second airy verse.
I swear I’ll find a way to fix it soon
So I’ll leave a penny in every room
Just to remind me what I left behind
And I can’t figure out for the life of me
How the hell I got in so deep
How do I know if I’m still alive
The way they are able to capture the feeling so precisely begs for the words to be listened to — and not casually, but forcefully. The music breaks down at the exact right moments. Coco draws out syllables in the most effective of ways.

Roses & Revolutions bottled something up supremely special with “I Don’t Have Feelings Anymore.”
They have captured something so raw and so real, but so difficult to talk about, because truthfully it is difficult to put into words. However, if you know what they’re describing, this song is one that hits home in a different, incredibly memorable, way.
And how did they bottle it? Coco tells it best: “We started playing this song at live shows and knew we wanted to release it after seeing response it was getting and having people come up and share their stories with depression and anxiety. As someone who deals with OCD and anxiety daily, it felt like I wasn’t alone and that others felt the same. The hard part was capturing the right vibe for this tune in the studio. We had multiple demos that we sent around to our team and none of them were quite right. While in LA, we had a session with Ben Cooper (Radical Face) and we ended up playing him the song. He got it right away. He had us record it on a real piano without a click track. It’s very raw, and hopefully captures the feeling of being trapped in limbo. No matter how hard you try to fix it, you always find yourself back at the beginning again.”
Roses & Revolutions’ fairytale-inspired EP Under The Spell will be released on April 17th. We can’t wait to hear what else they’ve bottled up.
