Self-love and acceptance are in high demand these days, and we can’t get enough of those songs that help us soar. An empowering and liberating outpouring of intimate pop and passion, Sofia Monroy’s “Sweet Temptation” is an anthemic embrace of the self. The Norwegian artist takes flight in her sixth single, giving listeners the tools we need to shine bright.
I say hello nice to meet you
I feel the tension between us
You got a girl yeah I’ve seen her
But she got nothing on me no
Let me realize
What it is you want
I can read your mind
And It’s just like mine
Independently released June 4, 2021, “Sweet Temptation” is a sugary outpouring of cinematic, arena-ready pop. Spanish guitars and synths coalesce in Sofia Monroy’s first single of the year – her latest since March 2020’s sweeping release, “I Don’t Wanna Fight.” It’s a dynamic return for the 22-year-old Mexico City-born, Stockholm-based artist – whose inspiration draws heavily from both roots, as well as American pop and soul. Citing the likes of Rosalía, Prince, and Aretha Franklin (among others) as some of her influences, 2021’s Sofia Monroy beams through the high highs of a catchy, cathartic release.
She rises fast out of the verses’ thick grooves, her stunning voice gracing the surrounding instrumentation like melting gold – and just like a precious metal, she gleams in a buoyant and immersive chorus:
Tell me all the things that you like
You can have it all for one night
Baby let me give you some of that sweet temptation
We can keep it up til’ sunrise
Don’t you wanna have just one bite
Baby let me give you some of that sweet temptation
A bilingual pop anthem, “Sweet Temptation” puts Monroy’s vocal prowess, her youthful spirit, and her diverse array of musical influences on full display.
“‘Sweet Temptation’ is about owning yourself and manifesting yourself as incredible,” Monroy tells Atwood Magazine. “Not specifically sexually, but in general for you and who you are. I want people to feel that strength when they listen to it. Sometimes I can get stuck and overthink things trying to write deep, original, and meaningful lyrics. With this release, it was the opposite. Sometimes it doesn’t have to be that advanced, the lyrics are very straightforward, and we had a lot of fun writing and recording it.”
“‘Sweet Temptation,’ to me, is also about female liberation. I struggled a lot earlier with taking control over the music-making process and trust my own opinion. I think it’s easy as a young female to question yourself when other people, especially men, are trying to decide for you. It’s been a challenge and still is sometimes, but I’ve taken the control into my own hands, and because of that, I’m very excited for this release. It’s more me, more eccentric, and it’s been a self-exploring journey that I can’t wait to share with everyone.”
I’ve been so good like Theresa
Why don’t you give me a reason
To live in sin for the weekend
I think I found my religion
Let me realize
What it is you want
I can read your mind
And It’s just like mine (It’s dirty)
Monroy explains that “Sweet Temptation” was built out of her own personal experiences, but ultimately it’s a song that resonates for all who need that reminder of their own self-worth: Her dynamic, unapologetic verses and her charismatic chorus – along with its climactic unveiling of deep, visceral feeling – make for an unforgettable and emotionally rich three minute journey.
You go get that sweet temptation
You go get that sweet temptation
Oh I got the sweet temptation
Tu sabes mi nombre Sofia
But you can call me Bonita
Forget your girl like amnesia oh
Tu sabes mi nombre Sofia
Don’t you think we should leave now
Close your eyes I can lead you
She may still be early in her career, but Sofia Monroy has proven herself to be a soulful, seductive, and empowering presence. “Sweet Temptation” is the lead single off the artist’s forthcoming debut EP, set for release later this fall; get lost in the song’s waves of passion, and stay tuned for more from this rising starlet in the months to come!
Tell me all the things that you like
You can have it all for one night
Baby let me give you some of that sweet temptation
We can keep it up til’ sunrise
Don’t you wanna have just one bite
Baby let me give you some of that sweet temptation
