Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering the music video for “Out of Our Minds,” off THRILLCHASER’s recently-released debut album A Lot Like Love (independently out 2/16/2018). Formerly known as AMERICAN WOLVES, the East Coast trio of vocalist/guitarist Rod Pires, bassist/synth Rob Lundy and guitarist Nikki Zell offer a bright indie rock punch full of big, bustling pop melodies. Their band name is the perfect fit: Stylized in all caps, THRILLCHASER captures the high highs and low lows of a group that thrives in the extremes.
Directed by Chris Newhard, the “Out of Our Minds” video vivifies an already-dynamic song’s effusive energies, evoking the intense emotional polarities of love’s ups and downs.

but it’s making perfect sense.

“‘Out of Our Minds’ was written during the summer of 2015 when Rod (Vocals/Guitar) & I were first starting American Wolves and recording with Dan Korneff on Long Island,” recalls THRILLCHASER’s Rod Lundy. “As American Wolves, we had performed the original version of the track live on tour, however it never saw an official release. During the recording of the debut THRILLCHASER album A Lot Like Love in late-2016/early-2017, we re-wrote and completely re-recorded the song with producer Taylor Larson. The song essentially is about embracing the chaotic nature of love and hoping for the best while expecting all of the worst.”
Much of “Out of Our Minds” focuses on the push-and-pull, ying/yang nature of desire and love: “You are my drug; polluted blood,” THRILLCHASER sing in the second verse, “You set fire to my head – toxic; we are senseless…” These emotions are so powerful that they’re overwhelming the senses, drowning the narrator in waves of volatile feeling. Frontman Rod Pires rises from an intimate whisper to an anthemic shout as he proclaims and protests the storm of warmth and doubt surging within.
Love is cruel, or so they say.
This internal outpouring gets physical in THRILLCHASER’s new video: Opening shots of a dimly-lit purple room depict a distraught, frenetic Rod Pires . His actions mimic those of someone going through withdrawal – he’s restless and frantic, moving from the bed to the dresser, to the window, and back again. Interspersed amongst these moments of distress are clips of Pires’ bandmates, either there in the room with him or in the room alone. They’re there to comfort him; to be his aid and support.
Ultimately, Pires breaks free of the bedroom (metaphorically and literally), and the band close the song on a beautifully-lit sand.
“Much like our video for ‘Hold on to the Night,’ the video for ‘Out of Our Minds’ was shot to the original (unreleased) version of the song in August of 2016, back when we were still American Wolves. After re-writing/re-recording the song for THRILLCHASER, we had the video re-purposed to fit the official incarnation of the song. The whole video was shot in my home state of Rhode Island. We had a last-minute cancellation and had to improvise a location the day-of. All of the indoor scenes were actually done in our practice space, and the outdoor scenes were done at Conimicut Point Park at about 4 AM.”

“Out of Our Minds” encapsulates as much agony as it does bliss, basking in a turbulence of passion. You never know where love will take you – it may end up a fleeting fling, or it may end up lasting a lifetime. But you can’t go anywhere without risking it all. We’ve only got one life here, so we might as well join THRILLCHASER and go out of our minds in pursuit of happiness.
