There’s a stigma about solitude that leads so many of us to head for the hills, rather than spend time on our own. It’s that association between isolation and loneliness that gives one-on-none time its negative connotation, and it permeates every inch of our society – from our dictionaries, to our social media, to our songs, and beyond. Most of us would rather escape it than embrace it, but what if we thought twice before filling every last moment of our days? North Carolina band Wine Pride’s achingly intimate shoegaze anthem “Lone Flyer” captures the beauty of being alone. It’s a seductive and smoldering indie rock song celebrating introspection and the all-too-often overlooked magic of solitude.

I’m drifting at the sound of your laugh
Not enough to make me stay
The distance we can’t prevent
Fade away
Your suspicious at the tone that I lack
Despite the words I say
I’m hearing whispers all over again
On replay

Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering “Lone Flyer,” the second career single from Charlotte, North Carolina’s Wine Pride. The alternative band of Aaron Felger [vocals, synth, guitar], brothers Jack Kozlowski [guitar] and Ty Kozlowski [guitar], Dylan Robbins [drums], and Alex Hanifin [bass], Wine Pride debuted last year with the brooding dream pop serenade “Sleep” and an instantly memorable tagline: Anxious rock delivered by daydreamers.

Inspired by the intersection of ’80s post punk (The Cure, Joy Division) and early shoegaze (Slowdive), Wine Pride began as frontman Aaron Felger’s solo project, but through jam sessions and word-of-mouth, quickly evolved into the genre-blending band they are today. With their self-titled debut album set to release May 26, “Lone Flyer” is a fresh look at the still very much emerging band and their  alluring sound, which sits at the crossroads of lo-fi indie rock, post-punk, and shoegaze. Moody, brooding vocals and reverb-drenched guitars create an encapsulating, immersive wall of sound as Wine Pride dwell in solo depths, exploring the freedom and wonder of being on your own and having time to yourself.

Flying alone, into the sun
Wasting away

Wasting away

“‘Lone Flyer’ is an ode to those who crave a moment of solitude; embracing the positive aspects of being unaccompanied through life’s most precious moments,” Aaron Felger tells Atwood Magazine. “A few years ago, I impulsively broke off to live in NYC, where I found myself on solo explorations through the city. Those experiences were incredibly cathartic as they provided a continuous dosage of introspection . The lyric ‘flying alone into the sun‘ is a direct representation from my lone ventures where I’d take the train around the city until the sun would rise; experiencing the city as it resets for a new day.”

Entranced by the end of the glass
Asleep while I’m awake
You know that I can’t stay
Runaway
Your mission is a flashback
With your past on display
But there’s nothing here left to save
Fade away
Flying alone, into the sun
Wasting away
Flying alone, into the sun
Wasting away

Whether you love alone time or absolutely can’t stand the very thought of it, there’s something utterly irresistible about “Lone Flyer.” Wine Pride’s sophomore single is an ethereal enchantment, its glistening, subdued production and contemplative mood making it the perfect companion for solo adventures of our very own.
