It sounds like it would be a tongue-in-cheek oxymoron, but something fits so perfectly about the title, “Beautiful Losers.” Mink’s Miracle Medicine weave a wondrously intimate tapestry in their new music video, homaging Leonard Cohen while capturing an all-too familiar push and pull of life and love.

Beautiful losers
Stepped on a subway
Eat at the boardwalk
Watching the sun play on the skin.
Beautiful losers
Tied to the handrail
Lied to their parents
I’m staying at Polly’s house again.

Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering the music video for “Beautiful Losers,” the second track off Mink’s Miracle Medicine’s recently-released third album, Thumbs Up Angel (out October 16).  Described by the band as “a collection of songs that reflects back, looks forward, and recognizes the occasional value of getting sidetracked,” Thumbs Up Angel is the perfect introduction to the Harpers Ferry, West Virginia duo of Melissa Wright and Daniel Zezeski if you haven’t yet met them already. A finessed, shimmering blend of alt country-tinged Americana with the occasional bit of soft rock thrown in for good measure, the album presents a confident artistry solid in their foundation and the identity they carved for themselves on the road. It’s a record of wondering and wandering – and while one could pull out any of their new songs to showcase this theme, it’s perhaps easiest to do so on “Beautiful Losers.”

Somber and soothing, “Beautiful Losers” is a bittersweet wash of warm, heavy-hearted, immersive music. Wright’s voice takes front and center atop an entrancing guitar pattern:

Mystery come, mystery go.
I change and I stay the same,
I change and I stay.
Mystery came, mystery went.
I change and I stay the same,
I change and I stay.

“‘Beautiful Losers’ was inspired by a novel of the same title by Leonard Cohen,” Wright explains. “It’s a song about the push and pull of teenage love in which the character lies about where they are going to meet a lover on the beach. It’s an ode to the time in our lives when we are the most defiant, the times that form us. The concept for the video was created by Anthony Simpkins and Reeve Powers. They also edited the footage that we captured on a hilltop in Harpers Ferry, WV.”

Beautiful losers,
Touching your lips through ocean salt
Cry like a dolphin
Thrown like a wave against the rocks.
Mystery come, mystery go.
I change and I stay the same,
Laughing at the same old show.
Mystery came, mystery went.
I change and I stay the same,
I change and I stay.

An ostensibly psychedelic visual full of surreal coloring, the “Beautiful Losers” video makes great use of beautiful blue skies sprinkled with white clouds as a backdrop. Out of this unassuming setting there flows a litany of visual effects and overlays, but no matter how much they change, the pair “stay the same”: Those effects are just added on top of the core identity we know to be true, like the beautiful losers we always are and always will be.

Suffice to say, it’s a trip to watch and a powerful new accompaniment to an already intimate song. A definite highlight off their new album, “Beautiful Losers” is a compelling immersion of nostalgia ready to whisk us into the past, while keeping us rooted right here in the present.
