The universe is alive and aglow in Jed and the Valentine’s new music video.

A sun-kissed ode to life and love and everything in-between, “Mineral” shines with the duo’s inner light as they celebrate the big and small moments that make up our brief, but wondrous time here on Earth. It’s an achingly intimate, heartfelt, and uplifting revelry – a beautiful daydream capturing the beauty of being here, right now.

Awake! – Jed And The Valentine
I drive through the dark
Just to hear a word
Whispers of names
I’ve never even heard
Blame it on the world

Blame it on me
For a lack of a role I couldn’t serve
Oooh… Do I push on through?
Oooh…

Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering the music video for “Mineral,” a standout single taken off Jed and the Valentine’s recently-released debut album, Awake! (independently out April 11, 2024). Armed with rich, warm vocal harmonies and bright, bold acoustic guitars (and more), Edmonton, Alberta-based singer/songwriters Jonah Morris and Maria Khaner have effectively introduced themselves as part of the next generation of folk rock troubadours.

Their songs are radiant and welcoming, their messages intimate yet timeless. Calling to mind such folk-adjacent bands like Of Monster and Men, Mumford & Sons, and The Head and the Heart, Jed and the Valentine are without a doubt an artist worth paying very close attention to over the coming years.

That being said, many are already taking notice of the Canadian duo: “Mineral” is their most-streamed song on Spotify (with over 65,000 listens), having found its way onto various influential “folk,” “campfire,” and “discovery”-related playlists. It’s a good track to have as your No. 1: An energetic tune with a strong beat and stunning dual-vocal performances from Morris and Khaner, “Mineral” effortlessly evokes the wonder and beauty of being alive. The pair bask in time’s glow, soaking in memories old and new as they rise as one in a beautifully impassioned chorus:

Oh my love, you’re the mineral
You’re the soil at my feet
You’re the headache and the keepsake
Of the spirit in my drink
You’re the first to leave your funeral
You’ve got so many places to be
In the harvest, in the heartache
I know you’ll come back to me

The song’s accompanying music video finds the pair playing their songs outside, in the wild.

“For me, the ‘Mineral’ music video holds a lot of the imagery we were trying to capture in the song itself,” Maria Khaner tells Atwood Magazine. “In the video, we wanted to be surrounded by nature. We decided to film in a place close to home, just outside of Nelson, BC where Jonah lived for a few years and went to college. The neighbourhood that we filmed in is full of waterfalls, hiking trails, and creeks, and we wanted to incorporate that somehow. Once we had all of the visuals we wanted, I drew up all of the writing for the lyrics. I wanted the lyrics to be a really strong focus, and decided that we were going to do that by incorporating them into the visuals themselves. We decided that they should feel really organic, and really down to earth— messy and all over the place, kind of like you’re writing a note to a friend (in this case, the ‘friend’ we’re writing to is the universe as a whole).”

“In the shots, you can see us next to a car that has been slowly reclaimed by the earth, covered in grasses and vegetation. There’s another shot where we’re standing in a small, temporary ‘island’ that has been created by the movement of a small creek, just one snow melt away from being washed downstream. With the song’s focus being a sort of ode to the universe, the ‘Mineral’ music video nods to the dichotomy of the harvest and the heartache.”

You’re the god damn life of the party
A free-falling feather just plucked from a bird
And when the gun goes off and you’re starting
About to take everything for all that it’s worth
And your knees might fall to the ground
Knocked in the back by something unseen

All the money tucked in your pocket
Could never predict who you just might be

If Jed And The Valentine weren’t already the perfect soundtrack to nature hikes and campfires, they are now. For Jonah Morris, this new video is extra special.

“Like Maria mentioned, we filmed in a few different locations based outside of where I went to college, but also where I’d visit my grandparents when I was growing up,” he explains. “All of the locations we filmed are spots that are ingrained into my memory, and that was intentional — the whole song talks about nostalgia for your connections to the people and places around you, so it felt right to make the main locations of the video be places from my childhood. I’ve jumped off that dock a thousand times, I’ve skipped stones in that creek when it was pouring rain, and I walked across that bridge to hike to the waterfall throughout every stage of my life. It felt right to include those spots to capture the essence of the song, and to commemorate this big step in our lives.”

Given what we know about Jed and the Valentine and their song “Mineral,” perhaps it’s no wonder that they named their debut album Awake!: This is ultimately just one in a set of ten tracks meant to celebrate, and ultimately embrace, the beauty and wonder of the human condition.

“We’ve always known what kind of music we wanted to put out, but as we were recording these songs we really leaned into using our sound to tell our stories alongside our lyrics,” Khaner says of the album. “We’ve really learned how to balance power and sensitivity to paint the picture of our musical connection.”
