Hozier Rocks SNL

Hozier, a seemingly new alternative singer/songwriter, is cultivating and captivating audiences all over the world with his hypnotizing voice. The “Take Me To Church” artist wrote this first hit in his attic in Ireland. He put it online as a free track and the wonderful world of social media catapulted this song to the success it now sees.  His gospel-like melodies and deep bellowing voice create a feeling in his work that is almost heartbreaking, yet it is so beautiful.  He can attribute his rising fame to the combination of his unique tone of voice and addictive song hooks. From an attic in Ireland to the headlining musical guest on SNL – who would’ve thought?

I remember the first time I heard “Take me to Church” on CoffeeHouse radio. I honestly thought, “wow this is kind of a weird but cool song.” Well, three hours later I found myself still singing the tune in my head while simultaneously searching for it on the internet. That is the magic of Hozier. He can hook, line and sink you before you even realize he’s doing it, which is how he made it from releasing free songs on the internet to headlining Saturday Night Live.

I know what you’re thinking, “That is his only song I know, is he a one hit wonder?” The answer is absolutely not. His new self-titled album Hozier is chock-full of beautifully tragic, unique and catchy songs that are all consistent with the raw, genuine talent of his voice and songwriting capabilities. “Cherry Wine” is a live recording off his album that truly creates the feeling that you’re sitting right next to him while he plucks the strings of his acoustic guitar and sings sweetly into your ear. “Work Song” is a beautifully written story with a chorus that contains heart-wrenchingly powerful lyrics such as “no grave can hold my body down, i’ll crawl home to her.” It will give you chills. Finally, “Something New” will have you turning the volume up, singing out loud and if your like me, trying your best to coordinate dance moves. You will have this feel good song on repeat after your first listen – I promise. In fact, I’m listening to it as I write this column. Now, those are just a few highlights off the album – all the songs have something different to offer. This is one of those albums that will leave you a little better off than when it found you. Be sure to check it out.

This is just the beginning for Hozier. Saturday Night Live was his first mainstream break, but I have a strong feeling that we will be seeing a lot of this soulful Irish singer. He is currently sweeping the U.S. on his tour. Go see him and thank me later.
