It’s in a bottle of cold wine
put away for the day we celebrate it

Let me tell you babe,
we’re gonna make it, mmhmm

It’s not the rising tide that breaks
the fall of what we’re faking, no

We have to take it in stride.

Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering “Make It,” Brooklyn-based folk rocker Jess Clinton’s third release of 2019 and the latest single off her forthcoming debut album Real Glass Heart (out July 26, 2019). The daughter of an actress mother and film composer father, Clinton grew up in Los Angeles before attending NYU’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study, where she concentrated in Songwriting and Folk Musicology. With two EPs under her belt and years of musical experience as a part of New York band Bellehouse, this is Clinton’s time to make a powerful statement on her own — and she does all that and more in her debut.

Preceded by singles “The Runaway” and “Sleeping Woman,” “Make It” best exemplifies Jess Clinton’s talents both as a singer and as a weaver of worlds: The track is a wondrous land full of rich sound, whether it comes in the form of her beautiful acoustic guitar work, lush flute trills, blended background organs, or the light, lilting piano that presses as gently as dew drops in the early morning fog.

It’s in the way you came to me
with lemonade and your plaintive melodies

Spinning your tassel
like a rotary, mmhmm

It isn’t bad advice to run away
the way you’re choosing to

But that’s no way to live life

For Clinton, this song serves as an anchor: “‘Make It’ started as an effervescent finger-style riff that popped up like a small bright flower during dark times,” the singer/songwriter tells Atwood Magazine. “In a moment where it felt like things were going south, I wanted to take this little seedling and follow its cheery momentum. ‘Make It’ unveiled itself as a sweet but powerful antidote over time; a reminder that this too shall pass.”2019, 2019 new music, new music, June 2019, premiere, exclusive premiere, track premiere, Atwood Magazine, Mitch Mosk, new music, music, independent music,

In between her gorgeous chorus oohs, Clinton pledges a hopeful message of perseverence: “Crawling across, we’re gonna make it in time.” Her words are simple, yet there’s a timeless element to this sentiment; it applies across all borders and boundaries, retaining its weight and offering strength to all who struggle, no matter what their burden may be. A nurturing, heartwarming expression of the worthwhile and meaningful, “Make It” is an intimate reassurance that things really will be okay.
