I got a new kind of love, nah
I got a true kind of love
making it hard for me
come make some time for me
I’m flying a new kind of way trying
but I’m on the longest delay
come make some love to me
before it’s time to leave
but, in my garden, we stay in love
we’ve always been in love.

Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering Richard String’s fourth single “In My Garden (Sad Boy Beck),” a feelgood wash of hazy warmth ready to shine a little light on all who listen. The musical outlet for Nashville-based producer Gavin Shea (Handmade Productions), Richard String debuted last August with “Proper Snacks,” an ambitious twelve-minute adventure that established Richard String as a true “entity” in his own right: Some moments reflected MGMT, others Pink Floyd, and still others Tame Impala, but those who made it to the end of this experimental psych/rap/pop/alt/???-infused odyssey can attest to the definitive uniqueness of this very new artist.

I got a new kind of love I got it!
I got a true kind of love
Ain’t got time to get you home to me,
but I’ve made a laundry list of all I need

A collaboration with Chris Gill, Matt Noth, and Greg Graves, “In My Garden (Sad Boy Beck)” finds Shea dipping deeper into the pop and soul pools of inspiration, reflecting a bit of Jungle and Glass Animals in his latest effort. Layered harmonies help his music resonate with depth and alluring color as he sings his catchy, emotive chorus:

say it: “in my garden, we stay in love
we’ve always been in love”

Says Shea, “‘In My Garden’ is about the goals and evolution of a relationship… feeling proud when together and love is new, and longing for one another when apart.”

“It’s [also] a song for people who stay up later than they should searching for connections to relationships they already have,” the artist tells Atwood Magazine. “It’s a reminder of where I am, and how I came to be here. I wrote it to jog my memory. I am fascinated by memories, because we’re able hold onto them so tightly to see ourselves through long periods of emotional drought. This song is a reminder to retain such memory, and lean on it until I get home to unplug the router, wait 15 seconds, and plug it back in.”

It’s a reminder of where I am, and how I came to be here. I wrote it to jog my memory.

Richard String – which has been described as Gavin Shea’s “Mister Hyde” – is truly an outlet of creative impulse for an artist that spends so much of his time helping other music makers bring their own visions to life. As such, Richard String’s music is not only unhinged, but also uninhibited: You never know what you’re going to get with one of his songs, but rest assured that it is sure to be entity unto itself. Just look at the artist’s previous release, “Dream Brother”: A bouncy acoustic guitar a la Jack Johnson mixes with sweet whistles and even sweeter melodies to make yet another uplifting musical experience, yet one that is totally unlike the style or feel of “In My Garden.”

Ultimately, it should come as no surprise to Gavin Shea that Richard String is an acquired taste – yet the fact of the matter is that many who take the time to listen to this music are sure to fall in love with its depth, its character, and its messaging. The only thing Shea has to really worry about is spreading the word.

Stream “In My Garden (Sad Boy Beck)” exclusively on Atwood Magazine, and let Richard String’s golden harmonies and glistening synths wash over your mind, body, and spirit. Light, hypnotic, and altogether effervescent, this song is as much an invitation to relax and let go, as it is one for us to connect and dive deep into ourselves. “In My Garden (Sad Boy Beck)” is available everywhere April 24th, 2020.

I tried out, but it’s too hard to love it ayy
cried out, but it’s too loud alone ahahah
I sigh now, but in truth I’m in love and awake
quiet down with that crying out and lying down for days
I tried hard to get you piling up in my brain
and by god, if it’s true I’m in love, then I’m gonna find my way.
