“swimming in pity” – Amie Blu
London singer/songwriter Amie Blu is known for her emotional and introspective lyrics – songs that cut to the core, unearthing the rawest parts of the human experience.
Her latest single, “swimming in pity,” is no different, coming straight from the musician’s heart. Released March 27th via 0207 Records, the alternative anthem – her first single of the year, following 2024’s nine-track debut, how we lose – was written from an anxious and vulnerable state. Each lyric is strikingly authentic, displaying her experiences with mental health in a heartfelt approach. Blu’s delicate vocals blend with the lyrics seamlessly, contributing to the depth of the track.

“I sometimes find a lot of comfort in my own sadness, and find it easier to wallow in my depression,” Blu tells Atwood Magazine. “As hard as it is to pull yourself out from that kind of place, it can also be really easy to just sit with it. ‘swimming in pity’ is me acknowledging this feeling of my own self-sabotage when it comes to my mental health.”
Excuses can easily be thrown around, especially when the topic of self-accountability is brought to the conversation. These lyrics mirror common thought processes, allowing listeners to understand what the artist is experiencing on a deeper level.
Always bad timing
That’s your excuse
The idea of physically swimming in pity captures the raw emotions and struggle throughout the song. Additional layers are found within the single through the inclusion of compelling imagery. Swimming in dangerous waters never leads in the right direction – especially when a person is drowning in their own anxieties. Where is the line between swimming and sinking? By the time a conclusion is made, it may be too late to swim to shore.
You and me
Swimming in pity
You and me
You make me feel weak
You make me feel weak
These relatable lyrics open up the conversation, as they could be addressed to a variety of people – whether it’s the listener themselves, the artist herself, a friend, or a partner. Blu cries out to herself and to her audience in a state of vulnerability found in every lyric.
Sold all your things and moved away
Complained ’bout all the empty space
Oh, you can’t help yourself
No, you can’t help yourself
Said that you would make amends
But I feel like I’m running out of
Oh, I can’t help myself
No, I can’t help myself

“swimming in pity” marks the beginning of a new chapter for Amie Blu, setting the tone for an upcoming project on the horizon.
This track opens the curtains wide, exposing the raw nerves of self-awareness and emotional honesty. With more to come, one thing is for sure: Amie Blu’s sentimental touch is here to stay.
