In her otherworldly way, Billie Eilish has managed to create a ballad-bop hybrid in “my future,” an anthem with humility and a reminder to all that a man does not make a strong woman with a bright future.

Since the release of WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?  in 2019, 18-year-old Billie Eilish has kept herself in the public conscious with the occasional song release. Her most recent single, “my future,” released July 30th and co-written with Eilish’s brother Finneas, is a jazzy wonderland with a lo-fi glaze. The track rolls through chill, synth-scapes and picks up a groove mid-track. It also features some of Eilish’s more intricate vocals, experimenting with breaking and runs along with her genius layered harmonies. “my future” was released along with an animation that gives off serious Alice in Wonderland vibes.

I’m not coming home
Do you understand
I’ve changed my plans
Because I’m in love with my future
Can’t wait to meet her.

The “my future” music video, directed by Andrew Onorato and produced by Chop Studio, follows Anime-Eilish along her journey through a rainstorm. Matching the sonic experience, the animation begins in muted greys and blues and blossoms into vibrant color about halfway through the video.

Out of the storm, but still in solitude, Anime-Eilish absorbs as much light as she can, growing like the magical environment that surrounds her. In her otherworldly way, Eilish has managed to create a ballad-bop hybrid, an anthem with humility, and a reminder to all that a man does not make a strong woman with a bright future.

Supposed to be unhappy without someone
But aren’t I someone?
I know better than to drive you home
Because you’d invite me in and I’d be yours again
… And I’m in love
But not with anybody here
I’ll see you in a couple years

It’s easy to allow the heaviness of the human condition to make us feel perpetually blue. And there’s plenty of stories being told by other artists that either indulge in an unhealthy amount of self-depreciation or bask in a view of the world that can only be seen through rose colored glasses. But in “my future,” Eilish is unapologetic about being the hero of her own story and offers up an empowering narrative to light the way for the rest of us to harness that level of self-love.
