Without a doubt, this is the song of an artist practicing what she preaches. Following previous singles “Twenty Nothing” and “When We Were Young,” “Float” is Frankie Bird’s third single of the year, as well as her third single under her brand new name: Fans may recognize her as the indie pop, all-caps artist FRANKIE, formerly signed to RCA Records. After spending her twenties finding moderate success in the pop music space, it was time for a change; as Bird (real name Frankie Miller) wrote in one social media post, “New name. New music. New chapter.“
And so, the past three months have been something of a dream come true for the artist formerly known as FRANKIE, as she sheds her old skin and leans into something fresh, something new, and something that’s been bubbling under the surface for a long time now. As she sings so forcefully in the chorus of her re-debut single “Twenty Nothing,” “27 didn’t feel like Heaven, 28 was never all that great, 29 I’ll make things right, I’m gonna get back all that’s mine.” Becoming Frankie Bird truly is a reclamation – an act of defiance not just to those who encouraged her to stay in the pop lane, but also to a former version of herself, who believed she had to bend over backwards to fit into someone else’s mold.
“Float” offers another intimate, insightful perspective to this ongoing journey of transformation, affirmation, and self-discovery. Singing alongside warm violins and jangling acoustic guitars, Bird pours forth a sweetly soaring melody and a story of renewal and acceptance. The act of floating – of just going with the flow – is inherently a surrender, but not in any negative context: “I’ll build a boat out of all the things I know,” Bird declares with buoyant grace and heartfelt intent.

“I wrote ‘Float’ about three days before my 30th birthday, making it the last song I wrote in my twenties,” Frankie Bird tells Atwood Magazine. “It poured out of me really quickly and felt like the final lesson I needed to learn before closing the decade. I spent so much of my late twenties feeling like I was getting nowhere because I was fighting the current of my life. I was trying to swim upstream to get to where I used to be, instead of allowing myself to think that there might be a different route that could be better for me.”

I was reintroduced to myself and my love for music and started making songs I never thought I’d be able to make with musicians I previously didn’t know existed. When you keep swimming against the current thinking it will get you to your destination quicker, you can start to drown. Instead if you decide to stop resisting and go where the water wants to take you, you’ll end up in places you never thought possible. What a ride, just float.”
