Brisbane’s Hollow Coves have long been the kind of band that brings out the beauty in the world: From the start, the indie folk duo’s songs spoke to the wonder in nature, the joy in our everyday lives, and the magic of memory and being. Four years on from their humble start, the now-celebrated band continue to capture and evoke beauty in song. Hollow Coves open up in dazzling form on “Hello,” a stirringly sweet and sentimental song ready to soothe our hearts and connect us to something bigger than ourselves.

Blessings – Hollow Coves
These days are slow and I’m caught inside
I’m in my head and I’m spinning round
If I call out will someone show?
I miss those days when you were home
Hello, Hello
Is there anybody out there? I’ve got my door open
Come in, Come in Come in
Come in

Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering Hollow Coves’ “Hello” acoustic session, following the track’s May 7 release via Nettwerk Music Group. The second single taken off Hollow Coves’ forthcoming Blessings EP (out June 11) follows this past March’s single “Lonely Nights” featuring Priscilla Ahn, another tender and spellbinding track that contrast intimate, almost whisper-like singing with rich, layered, evocative harmony. The duo of singer/songwriters Ryan Henderson and Matt Carins, Hollow Coves have rise to the fore off their ability to weave worlds around their gently moving acoustics: 2017’s debut EP Wanderlust made for a special introduction, but the band truly made their mark on their first full-length record Moments, released in Fall 2019. Blessings will be the band’s first multi-track release following their LP, and if “Lonely Nights” and “Hello” are any indication, this new EP is sure to keep building off the band’s tranquilizing acoustic artistry, while still staying true to their folk roots.

In point of fact, “Hello” feels a bit like quintessential Hollow Coves.

“This song was actually based off one of the first songs I ever wrote back in school,” Matt Carins tells Atwood Magazine. “Well, at least the chorus and the chord progression. I stumbled across the song again during COVID lockdowns and some new verses came to mind. After I finished writing it, I uploaded the song to Dropbox where Ryan and I share music. It was only up for about 10 minutes, and I decided to delete it because I didn’t think it was any good. Luckily Ryan had received a notification that it had been uploaded and listened to it in those few minutes. He messaged me straight after I deleted it and asked, ‘What was that song? I like it.’ He heard potential in it, so we decided to then work on it. Never would I have thought this song would eventually be out in the world, but here it is!”

I look outside the grass has grown
I think about those words you wrote
Wish I could go back and change it all
I miss those days I want them back
Hello, Hello
Is there anybody out there? I’ve got my door open
Come in, Come in Come in
Come in

An honest and intimate heart-on-sleeve reflection, “Hello” rises and falls in waves of longing and bittersweet love.

Hollow Coves capture these emotions vividly on record, and their live performance further amplifies the song’s nuances. “There’s so many beautiful locations in the hinterland of the Gold Coast, and we were privileged enough to come across this old pickup truck in Currumbin Valley,” the duo say of the video shoot. “We thought it was kind of quirky and fitted the mood of the song.”

Whether you’re in need of some comfort, or just a fan of rich harmonies and earthy folk textures, Hollow Coves have delivered another delight in “Hello.” Stream their acoustic session exclusively on Atwood Magazine.

Blessings EP is out June 11.
