“I See You in the Dark (Alt)” – DD Allen
I see in the dark, and you’re coming my way…
* * *
Ripples of raw passion and pure energy radiate throughout DD Allen’s latest EP.
It’s a bold move to label yourself a Rebel Hero, and yet one can’t help but root for the British singer/songwriter as he winds his way through six spirited songs, navigating everything from love and loss to freedom, brotherhood, and the promise that accompanies a new day. Autobiographical and achingly human, Allen’s candid performances speak to our most human experiences and instincts, and nowhere does this resonate with more truth (or depth) than on the EP’s opening track: An electric, invigorating anthem of hope and renewal, “I See You in the Dark” soars with grace and gusto as DD Allen finds closure in his past and possibility in his future.

Between the ocean and the City
Is our hometown
She buys a dress it looks so pretty
She looks around
He sees the dust in the sun rays
Of his sorrow
He’s pirouetting through the subways
Of tomorrow
It’s a world like no other for the brother
that stands by your side
But it’s one for the money
and two for the waves that we ride
Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering “I See You in the Dark (alternative version),” the fiery opening salvo off DD Allen’s recently-released Rebel Hero EP. A roaring remake of Allen’s 2020 single (of the same name), the “alternative version” is bolder, louder, and perhaps a bit rowdier than the original, with fresh production and a new lead guitar line adding even more depth and dramatic flare to Allen’s moment of reckoning and resolve.
The songwriter comes to a fever pitch in the track’s chorus, his pent-up emotions spilling over into a cathartic, captivating, and all-consuming climax:
You left too soon
You’ll be back someday
I see in the dark,
and you’re coming my way
I don’t know where to look
I don’t know what to say
I see you in the dark,
and you’re coming my way

“When relationships come to an end, you’re left with memories and the images you see every time you close your eyes,” Allen tells Atwood Magazine. “For some people, there’s always hope it’ll change one day; hope is a powerful thing. That’s ‘I See You in The Dark.’ It’s from an amazing part of my life.”
“We created this version of the song with more drive and momentum. As time goes by, you realise it’s time to push forward, and I wanted the energy in the song to reflect that.”
There’s certainly a bit of irony that Allen dug into his ‘past’ oeuvre in order soldier ahead, but the result speaks for itself – and we applaud an artist who is willing to tinker and toy with their own works. “I See You in the Dark (alt)” is galvanizing and gritty, relenting and radiant; a stadium-sized rock anthem built on the timeless pillars that have helped push humans ‘onward and upward’ for centuries. With every ending, there comes a new beginning; the story isn’t over just because the players, or even the stage, has changed.
Allen sings this truth the life once more, accompanied by pounding drums, charged guitars, and an unassailable faith in the mysterious ways of the world. The result is an altogether charming, smile-inducing seduction ready to be savored, celebrated, and spun on repeat.
I hear the echoes on the back streets
It’s all about wealth
Where all the wasted fill the back seats
Of life itself
What I’d to do have her back again
Just to kiss her
My love she can’t see through the rain
And I miss her
It’s a world like no other for the brother
that stands by your side
But it’s one for the money
and two for the waves that we ride
You left too soon
You’ll be back someday
I see in the dark,
and you’re coming my way
I don’t know where to look
I don’t know what to say
I see you in the dark,
and you’re coming my way

The best part of all? This song is just one of six stunners off the newly-released Rebel Hero.
“Lockdown played a big part in Rebel Hero – desperate times managing collective despair, depression and drink,” Allen admits. “But amid the boredom, anxiety and uncertainty, I found inspiration in Huey Morgan’s book Rebel Heroes – those stories about the renegades of yesteryear like Jimi, Janis, Cassie Elliot, and Amy provided an escape. I started to figure out what it’s like to value freedom, love, camaraderie, hope, and nostalgia. The record is really me presenting these human emotions back to listeners; I hope it passes on that sense of what it is to be human.”

Forty licks shirt
Tracks in the dirt
Morning cold wind whistling
He flips a coin to figure what he is
While she dances on the ragged edges
Just to feel something
You left too soon
You’ll be back someday
I see in the dark,
and you’re coming my way
I don’t know where to look
I don’t know what to say
I see you in the dark
and you’re coming my way
