There is a liberation that happens when you come out from under a toxic relationship. One so toxic that you can’t even believe you let yourself be in it for so long. There is a feeling and a confidence in finally knowing that you are not being treated even near the way you deserve. The best way to move past it? Erase the person from your life and move on. Jessy does just so in her latest music video for “Lie.”
Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering the music video for Jessy’s sophomore single “Lie,” directed by Etienne Bowler (MisterWives). The new song follows the artist’s October 2020 debut “Day by Day,” a buoyant piece of sparkling indie pop.
“I was young, in love, and thought he was it for me, the man I was going to marry,” Jessy says of her new release. “Then again, so did a lot of other women apparently! After being relentlessly lied to and cheated on for years, writing this song truly helped me heal and move on and I can now celebrate leaving him behind, in the rear view mirror.. or maybe even somewhere darker.”
The music video for “Lie” begins like an old movie with 1920s horns backing Jessy’s opening scene eerily calm for what is to come next. 1920s exit and 2021 enters as Jessy drives echoing the lyrics that encapsulate the song,
Found out you stepped out on me
Was hard to watch you go
Gonna make you pay the fee
You’ll be at your low
Can’t be empty promises
Everywhere you go
They’ll be catching up to you
With so many in a row
The attitude of the chorus matches the action of the video with Jessy seemingly covering up a grave,
You’re playing with fire
You don’t care who you burn
You’re on a downward spiral
With no way to return
The video continues as Jessy liberates herself from the past that she had been so burdened with,
I can’t say I’m too angry
For the women you brought through
Your cheating set me free
Cause I woulda said I do
I can’t say I’m too angry
For the women you brought through
Your cheating set me free
Cause I woulda said I do
(I woulda said I do)
The hints at a buried body are no longer hints as the final chorus hits and we see Jessy remove the body from her life.
The metaphor, although dark, is realistic in a sense. When you’re in the dark fog of a toxic relationship for so long, being treated so poorly, sometimes the only thing to do is to completely erase them from your life and move on. We look forward to hearing more from this young artist!
