The Canadian alt-rockers didn’t stop there, however, dropping their hit album Blame My Ex and heading on a headline tour. The band secured support slots for iconic acts adjacent, like girl in red, The Rolling Stones and Greta Van Fleet. Their electric synergy truly encapsulates their 10+ years together as a band, and with every single comes broader creative strides in their spirited creativity.

The band’s newest single “Jocelyn” (released September 18th via AWAL) arrives in response to the band’s swift rise to stardom. The single is a rumination on feelings of imposter syndrome amidst the band’s recent accolades. It finds The Beaches at a moment of self-reflexivity, almost like a momentary deep breath right before jumping head-first into the deep end of fame – and they do so in all The Beaches glory: Playful fluctuating rhythms back the distinctive vocals of lead singer Jordan Miller, as she sings, “What do you even see in me, Jocelyn? Why do you still look up to me, Jocelyn?” Indeed, Jocelyn, the character of the track, holds a mirror to the band’s recent stardom. In a brilliant turn of phrase, they look to Jocelyn to ask how she could put them on a pedestal, while they put Jocelyn on a pedestal herself (her PhD in politics and all).

On the track, Jordan Miller explains, “We wanted to write about the experience of feeling undeserving of all the reverence that was being thrown away after ‘Blame My Ex’ did so well. All of us in the band are just a bunch of messy girls, and we felt strange about the way that some people were putting us on pedestals.”
“Anyways, at some point during the session, our co-writer Lowell kept singing the name ‘Jocelyn,’ so we decided to see if we had any fans who were named Jocelyn, and we found one! We kind of wrote it about this brilliant young woman, and about the experience we were going through, feeling uncomfortable and undeserving of Jocelyn’s adulation.”

Miller’s full vocals lay atop Eliza Enman-McDaniel’s mesmerising drum percussives, propelling the track forth. Guitarists Leandra Earl and Kylie Miller fill the gaps in between, rounding out the track’s sound to its full alt-rock expanse. To the band, “Jocelyn” is their way of expressing their disbelief at their fans’ admiration.
What arrives as a result is a dynamic single that reminds us of human vulnerability and the inner questions that arise in being an artist. The Beaches do so unwaveringly, simultaneously solidifying the band’s resounding impact and irresistible strength, taking over the alt-rock world one step at a time.
