Thrashing through a pulsating crowd, hailing a can of beer to the sky, and screaming your lungs out are just a few elements of crafting the potent rock appeal.
It takes a special kind of cadence to create the feeling of protest whilst wanting to dance. In turn, Japandroids have mastered these experiences with no difficulty.
It’s a little late for breakfast
but for you two, I’ll see what I can do
Coffee coming right up
and two shots of the good stuff too
Aren’t you tired of being tired all the time?
Girl, your eyes are awfully red
As for you, boy, ain’t hard to tell in love
with it all, never want it to end
Ma’am, have mercy
I’m sweating through my shirt
Anymore, my body’s gonna burn
Up in front of everyone
Released July 17, 2024 via ANTI- Records, “Chicago” focuses deeply on reassurance, or knowing something is more than what it seems, and spiraling thoughts of self-acceptance. As if the romantic crush you have always had is manifesting right in front of you and urging the inner saboteurs to call it like it is.
“Sorry baby, we call it like we see it in Chicago.”
With an earnest message, Japandroids demand their audience to rethink the possibilities of what could be. The track’s sound is unapologetic and in your face, staying true to the gargantuan sound Japandroids have produced since their first two critically acclaimed albums, Post-Nothing (2009) and Celebration Rock (2012).
After a somewhat lengthy hiatus, the powerhouse duo Brian King and David Prowse are securing legendary status, announcing their fourth and final album, Fate & Alcohol (out October 18, 2024).
King, who vibrates his seminal guitar and vocals, and Prowse, who supports with his own vocals and pummeling drums, ground themselves in their own cadence on this new track.
Don’t got the words, don’t matter.
Sometimes silence says it all,
but if you ask me, pathetic comes to mind,
fate and alcohol.
Noting this as their final contribution and farewell, it seems appropriate to deem the first word of the album as fate. The Vancouver duo have a well-deserved legacy, constructing some of the most colossal anthems in the scene and towering above the norms, but all good things must come to an end.
Long live Japandroids.
