Piece after piece after piece
How long this time will you hold a branch for me?
Was I just looking for something to grab?
Lift me up, tear me down,
I want the whole damn bag for free

Could you give it to me?
And I move so you might look over
Thread the needle through our hands
Just cover me, cover me in clover
And I’ll give you a soft place to land

Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering “Love Language,” the stunning third single taken off Katie Kuffel’s forthcoming fourth studio album, Alligator (out March 19). Following Kuffel’s recent singles “Carillon” and “1999,” “Love Language” finds the artist exploring the innermost nuances of intimacy and communication through a breathtakingly delicate and cinematic outpouring of expressive, bluesy, and jazz-tinged song.

“Love Language” grows out of a piano ballad into an enveloping band experience, with the haze of a gorgeous overdriven guitar and the heat of seductive trumpet blows adding color to an already vivid musical moment. “And I move so you might look over,” Kuffel sings slowly in her affecting chorus, her smoky voice an utterly enchanting beacon of energy and haunting emotion. “Thread the needle through our hands. Just cover me, cover me in clover, and I’ll give you a soft place to land.” It’s a truly wondrous experience to behold, and one worth indulging in again and again as Kuffel’s visceral vocals and accompaniment wash over the ears.

In surrendering herself in song, Katie Kuffel has made an irresistible piece of music.

For Kuffel, “Love Language” lays it all out on the table: “The title’s a bit on the nose, but it cuts to the truth of main issues I’ve had in my relationships in the past,” she tells Atwood Magazine. “The question is, how do we communicate the thoughts and feelings we experience to another person? How do we wade together through pain, and joy, and love? So this is me, trying to convey that tender moment when emotions are high, and how I still want to know you and for you to know me, and that this relationships matters and is special because it’s fragile and needs tending. Because it’s worth figuring out.”

Learned by touch got a hammer for a crutch
There’s a shape in my mouth, it feels like you so much
Quiet stays stretched, I don’t know what I said!
Look at me, look at me don’t forget!
That I move so you might look over
Thread the needle through our hands
Just cover me, cover me in lover
I’ll give you a soft place to land
I’ll give you a soft place to land

Reminiscent of Regina Spektor, Grace Potter, Fiona Apple, and many others in jazz-adjacent singer/songwriter role, Kuffel’s performance is absolutely astonishing. She breathes a lifetime of feeling into four minutes of musical beauty, bringing to bear the intensity of her innermost intimate emotions. “Love Language” is ultimately a submission of the self, and it is with this in mind that Kuffel makes every second of her new song meaningful.
