‘Tear Me Apart’ is a song about resilience, about finding the resolve to not let the challenges and darkest moments define you, but instead be the making of you.

Clad in shiny silver space suits, their instruments in hand, the three members of Canterbury’s lotusbliss stand on an empty, open runway. The countdown to launch is over, and they’re taking off in style – erupting in a dizzying, dazzling fever dream of emotionally-charged, synth-soaked indie rock. Empowering, impassioned, and utterly invigorating, lotusbliss’ “Tear Me Apart” is red-hot and rip-roaring: An all-consuming flood of perseverance and resolve channeled into seismic, searing sound.

There’s no secrets tonight
Only hearts open wide
In the face of denial
Promise I’ll never tire, cos
I won’t let this be what tears me apart
I won’t let this be what

Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering the self-directed music video for “Tear Me Apart,” lotusbliss’ first single of 2024 (out February 9). The Canterbury-based trio of brothers Seth, Josh, and Adam Gauton, lotusbliss have been dousing audiences with cinematic indie-electric reveries since their debut in 2018. Their most recent release, 2023’s An Aching Sea Sessions, brought us behind-the-scenes on 2022’s An Aching Sea EP, which When the Horn Blows‘ Jemma Levine praised for its dreamy soundscape and called a “tightly-produced land full of the woes of love, loss, and all that is in between.”

If their last record dwelled in the depths of life’s most aching emotions, then perhaps we can understand “Tear Me Apart” as the next step after our wallowing is over – when we pick ourselves back up, dust ourselves off, and set the controls for the heart of the sun. The band hold nothing back in a dramatic, dynamic chorus made to be played loud and aggressively on arena stages:

Passion grows high and low
Build it slowly
Give it away, don’t give it away now
Fire to tame
Brave or foolish, I never know
In each case
Give it away, don’t give it away now

“‘Tear Me Apart’ is a song about resilience, about finding the resolve to not let the challenges and darkest moments define you, but instead be the making of you,” Josh Gauton tells Atwood Magazine. “It’s the first single we’re releasing from our upcoming project, where all the songs carry some sort of relational narrative – sometimes euphorically amorous, sometimes fraught – and visually we wanted to represent that in a way that captures the highs and lows, the sense of exploration and adventure and the intensity that can come with it.”

“The ‘Space Race’ era of the ’50s and ’60s felt like the perfect vehicle for this, with all the drama and the underlying tension of that time underscoring the dream of reaching worlds beyond; planets and celestial bodies orbiting one another in beautiful and uncharted territories. The video for ‘Tear Me Apart’ is the first outing for this concept.”

Tongues like knives sharpen up
What we had turned to rust
I will not fly away
Concrete set all around, ’cause
Passion grows high and low
Build it slowly
Give it away, don’t give it away now
Fire to tame
Brave or foolish, I never know
In each case
Give it away, don’t give it away now

The Gauton brothers share directorial credit for the music video with filmmaker Henry Milne. who also spearheaded videography and grading. The visual itself is quite jarring – thrilling, really, switching between scenes of the band jamming on the tarmac and sitting at the control panel of a space shuttle, preparing for takeoff.

“We filmed it all in our native county of Kent, at the disused Manston airport near Margate – known in more recent times for accommodating thousands of lorries and their drivers after Brexit complications left them stranded and parked up on the airport’s runway, as well as being the location for a number of scenes in the Sam Mendes film Empire of Light,” the band explains. “The site manager was amazingly helpful and we were able to film on the runway, in the old passenger terminal and various hangers and buildings across the site.”

“We also filmed inside a number of Cold War era planes at the nearby RAF Manston History Museum, who were also brilliant. Josh produced and directed it, with videographer and friend Henry Milne capturing everything. We’re really proud of the results and feel like this might be our favourite video we’ve made so far.”

I won’t let this be what tears me apart…
