There are certain songs that stick with you, and often, those songs are the ones that seem to have been written for late night drives, and to soundtrack moments you want to remember. Logan James’ debut single “Half Heart,” reminiscent and full of feeling, is one such song.
Only loved
Only loved
Half of my heart
Only loved you
Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering Dallas,TX artist Logan James’ debut single, “Half Heart,” releasing independently October 1, 2020. Since childhood, James has been playing music with his older brothers, and since has played in bands with friends. But “Half Heart” finds James stepping out as a solo artist, and the result is a piece of instantly classic indie pop.
Written in March 2020 alongside producer Luke Johnson (Life After Youth,) “Half Heart” opens with a quick snippet of dialogue: “I don’t love you anymore.” “…Since when?” That quick exchange of words sets the tone, and the track launches into a synth-y drumbeat that feels both familiar and fresh. Progressing on, “Half Heart” ebbs and flows, fading out before cinematically building again, true to the way our feelings tend to change when reflecting on the past.
Everything’s wrong
I’m alright
Holding on to something
That needs to die
But I don’t wanna waste time
Lyrically, that reflection shines through, as “Half Heart” tells of a relationship that ended mutually. “I wanted to give everyone [a glimpse of] what I was feeling in my past relationship without giving too much detail, but just enough,” James tells Atwood Magazine. In the midst of slight lyrical vagueness, is a snippet of one of James’ favorite poems, Tim Burton’s “Voodoo Girl,” in the song’s bridge. “[Burton] inspired the whole album, and everything I’m doing now,” says James.
She knows she has a curse on her
A curse she can’t win,
for if someone gets too close
The pin sticks further in
With a full album releasing later in 2020,“Half Heart” proves an exciting first glimpse at what’s to come. And as far as debuts go, Logan James has made a memorable one. Stream “Half Heart” today, exclusively on Atwood Magazine!
