What I love about country singer Laci Kaye Booth is that she writes for women and girls.

Her songwriting is through the female gaze, which gives it the credibility and vulnerability that are often ignored when you listen to country music. A country artist and songwriter for almost a decade, Booth’s music has a newness and uniqueness to it that this particular genre has been crying out for, for years. There is currently no-one making music like Booth.

Booth began teasing her new song “George F****** Strait” (6 June via Geffen Records) on social media back in April. The song digs deeper into the toughness with its provocative lyrics and screaming electric guitars. The track follows Booth’s single “Daddy’s Mugshot”, a song inspired by her father and full of grittiness, think a western shot in dark tones, but also with a wry humour to it.

“My very first concert was George Strait, the nosebleed seats at Houston Livestock show and rodeo. The majority of his music I’ve known by heart since I was a little girl. This song is about admiring and loving a cowboy as he ages, with the prime example being the King of Country music, the Troubadour himself.”

:: INTERVIEW ::

Booth’s vocals own the record, taking you on a journey into wanting a man that perhaps you know you shouldn’t.

This new musical direction has an edge, a danger to it. Booth’s words are minimal and chosen carefully. On her debut album, The Loneliest Girl in the World, Booth used her words and instrument to paint an intricate landscape filled with characters, memories and nuance. “George F****** Strait” focus is on taking you places that would make your mama blush.

Boy they still make em
Just like they used to
He got them manners
Of a southern Baptist saint
He got a wrench
I got a screw loose
He got me buckin
Right out the starting gate

When I spoke to Booth back in April she told me, “I’ve had the title “George F****** Strait” in my notes app for a long time. I held on to it until it fell out of my mouth when I was writing with Anderson East and Melissa Fuller. I think it was meant to be, because I wouldn’t want to hear the title any other way now. It’s definitely different than anything I’ve done so far.”

Produced by Ben West and Anderson East, and co-written by Booth, East and Fuller, “George F****** Strait” is sung from the perspective of a woman entirely comfortable in her sexuality. A woman who has a swaggering confidence and is not afraid to ask for what she needs.

Come by it honest
How I pick em
It’s in my roots
That I want em in boots
Tie me up
I got a problem
And I know just the kinda
Lasso he can use

“George F****** Strait” is solely about the feeling. The unbridled, almost feral quality of the song, the tempo, the wailing guitars in the bridge, intertwined with Booth’s unmatched choir of “aaahhs” that reach a crescendo point, only to crash back down into the chorus. The song is ultimately about desire.

Lord if I can’t have ‘em
I’ll get on my knees and pray
God give me a man that just gets better with age
I’ve loved a lot of cowboys in my Daddy-issue phase
God give me a man that just gets better with age
