Anticipating the next leg of their tour, indie rock five-piece Lunar Vacation have shared “Lights Off,” a self-produced standalone single following their recently released sophomore album, Everything Matters, Everything’s Fire. Known for their heartfelt lyrics and soft, touching vocals, the group once again deliver with emotional depth and sonic warmth.

forget the talk of timing
forever I would call it
it always seems inviting
with all the lights off
f* the talk of timing
the fear is what I’m finding
not everything’s exciting
with all the lights all gone
“This song feels like an open letter,” singer/guitarist Gep Repasky tells Atwood Magazine. “Naturally, I have my own meaning tied into it but whether or not it’s a letter of adoration or the final farewell, it’s not for me to say. Whether it’s about something physical or intangible, it’s also not for me to say. It could be about both or neither.”
“It is up to the listener to create their own meaning, take what resonates with them, and use it to be the kindling wood in the growing fire of feeling, creativity, thinking and understanding.”
until I cut the line and
the image is refined and
I say it’s looking fine and
sealed off, forgotten
In this way, the song invites listeners to seek their own clarity within its open-endedness. Not every song needs a singular story or linear narrative; instead, “Lights Off” captures a range of simultaneous experiences. Lunar Vacation leave the track open for interpretation, allowing fans to tie their own memories to Repasky’s bittersweet lyrics.
I’m just being honest
it’s over if you’d want it
not everything’s exciting
with all the lights all gone
Timing is such an unusual concept – how different a moment can feel depending on when it happens in our lives. Or how long a wait can stretch when anticipating someone or something. This links to the metaphor of the lights being “off”: The sense of being stuck in the dark, waiting for light to return. Without it, we can feel lost, disoriented, or unsure of where to go. This metaphor sits at the heart of the song, encapsulating the emotional ambiguity threaded throughout.
now my wires are crossed
I’m feeling a spark
pass on

Metaphors are carefully woven through each lyric, adding thoughtful layers of symbolism. The image of crossed wires can represent miscommunication or emotional confusion in a relationship. But wires can also carry electricity – sparks, tension, and connection. These lines reflect the complexity of emotion, where meaning can easily become scrambled or charged.
Lunar Vacation’s vulnerability shines through, and the raw emotion in Repasky’s vocal delivery strips everything – song, artist, and listener alike – down to their core; to something deeply human: Intimate, aching, and real.
