Ceaseless fairytale relationships are a childhood dream; a dream that, as The Covasettes realise on their new single “Modern Rapunzel,” is sometimes far too ambitious.

“Modern Rapunzel” is an indie rock dream on record, but the song is sure to soar even higher live on stage.
The Covasettes have the perfect foundations for a first-class indie-rock band; anthemic choruses and a cool, collected, nonchalant attitude. Equipped with all the right tools, the Manchester-based band have become a hot commodity on the summer festival circuit and have garnered support from some of the UK’s top tastemakers, including Fearne Cotton and Scott Mills.
Consisting of Matt Hewlett (lead guitar), Chris Buxton (vocals), Jamie McIntyre (bass), and Matt Buckley (drums), The Covasettes have returned in 2021 with their new single “Modern Rapunzel,” out for release on March 5th. With the recent announcement that UK festivals are due to return in 2021, after a year of cancellations due to the pandemic, The Covasettes’ release of “Modern Rapunzel” could not be any better timed.
Speaking of the making of “Modern Rapunzel,” vocalist Chris Buxton said, “We’re in a period now where there’s less pressure on us to release music. So, we wanted to bide our time and keep writing new music until we had a song that blew us all away, and it became clear pretty quickly that Modern Rapunzel was exactly the song we were waiting for. To put it simply, it sounds huge, and that has been amplified by the production style that Jamie (bassist) has adopted. It’s really exciting for us to be constantly experimenting with new sounds, and I think that is perfectly illustrated in “Modern Rapunzel”.
Are you alright
Locked up all night?
Do you feel like running out into open space?
Have you no fight
Try as you might
Do you dream of breaking out of your home-made cage?
But I’ll tell you what we’ll do
This time tomorrow
You can come and be with me
After amassing over 1.5 million streams and experiencing some noteworthy successes in 2020 with singles Be Mine and Spin, it’s clear The Covasettes know how to write a killer indie-rock anthem. The band’s new track, “Modern Rapunzel”, is a relatable song about drifting away in a relationship and experiencing that sinking feeling as you realise you’re kidding yourself into holding on. The track opens with a dynamic and distinctive 90s style guitar riff that is reminiscent of Weezer’s early sound. As the verse begins, Buxton’s initially relaxed vocals make way for a laid back verse before the energetic chorus elevates the song.
I said come on, get on
Burst out of your bubble
We’re a long time gone
My modern Rapunzel
And I get the feeling one day you’ll fly
I said come on, get on
My modern Rapunzel where’ve you gone?
With electrifying riffs and palpitating drums, “Modern Rapunzel”’s chorus creates a sonic buzz perfect to get any festival crowd jumping. The second verse reigns in the chorus’s vigour to rebuild lost energy. As Buxton sings, “Are you close to quitting? Do you feel like breaking out into open space?”, the song’s theme of losing grip of a relationship is at its most raw.
Do you squeeze to fit in?
Are you close to quitting?
Do you feel like breaking out into open space?
But I’ll tell you what we’ll do
This time tomorrow
You can come and be with me
Following a second stirring chorus, the track breaks into a fierce instrumental that shows The Covasettes in their best light; musicians made for the live stage. A final chorus plays before “Modern Rapunzel” comes to an end.
With the release of their new track, it’s hard not to dream of a day when The Covasettes step back onto the live stage.
“Modern Rapunzel” is an indie rock dream on record, but the song is sure to soar even higher live on stage.
