All it takes is one heartbreak for a soul to know the pain of love. It’s incredible to think that something so majestic can breed such darkness and turmoil in its wake; this is the mystery of love, and furthermore human emotion. Brigetta captures the pain of heartbreak in her infectious indie pop anthem “Sick,” a sweet and impassioned confrontation full of intimacy and vulnerability.
oh my stomach hurts
seeing pictures of you only makes it worse
yah you’re being cold
i need to see a doctor
need an antidote
hard as i’m trying, try
oooh, i just can’t fight it

The solo endeavor for 19-year-old Brigetta Truitt (of Atwood’s beloved band Truitt), Brigetta “re-“introduced herself earlier this year with September’s “Tic Tac Toe,” a daring electropop indulgence.
Developed with co-writers Luke Arens, Charlotte Sands, and her brother/Truitt bandmate Brett Truitt, “Sick” further establishes Brigetta’s penchant for intense vocal deliveries and clever lyrical sass. The track captures an all-time familiar feeling for anyone who’s fallen in love more than once.
you make me sick
you make me sick
when i start to smell your cologne
i think about the photos
i never got to keep them
wish i took them on my own phone
“I think anyone who has ever been through an unwanted breakup can relate to being physically ill because of a person,” Brigetta reflects. “I was in my session talking to my friends & co-writers [about] how anytime I hear this guy’s name, see his picture, or even get a whif of someone wearing his cologne, I would feel sick to my stomach. I think a lot of people who have gone through any kind of relationship rejection can relate to your body physically becoming ill because of that person. No one likes that feeling of not being wanted. I often find that it irrationally impacts a person, kinda making them psychotic sick- so I channeled that feeling and wrote this song.”
Heartbreak is complex, yet instantly recognizable and painfully simple. “Sick” channels that hurt into action and intent; it’s lashing back out at the person who’s done us wrong. A reclamation of sorts, it allows Brigetta to have the last word in a situation she never wanted in the first place.
makes me
borderline depressed
i don’t wanna go out, i wanna stay in bed
read our messages
over and over like it’s on medicine
hard as i’m trying, try oooh
i just can’t fight it
Light synth textures add depth and warmth to what could otherwise be a dark, dour song. These instruments, alongside Brigetta’s bright, angelic vocals, help make “Sick” the soaring pop explosion that will captivate audiences well into 2019.
It’s just one of the many aspects of Brigetta’s unique character that shines through this new track. “The visuals for this song represent the psychotic side,” Brigetta describes. “The animals on my satin pj set “come to life” in the cover art, because growing up anytime I was sick, I’d chill with my imaginary pals and talk to myself. Kinda how you feel post-breakup of constantly feeling alone or outcasted.”
For Brigetta Truitt, 2018 has been the start of something truly special – and the sky’s the limit, from here on out.
i’m too scared to say it,
say it, say it out loud
there’s a million different reasons
that i’m missing you now
i’m too scared to say it,
say it, say it out loud
there’s a million different
reasons why
“This truly is one of my favorite songs I’ve ever written, and it’s kinda wild to put it out because thousands of people will be basically reading my personal thoughts. However, that’s what I love about songwriting, the communion it brings from strangers all over the world, reminding us we’re all experiencing the same emotions; whether they are dark or radiant.”
There’s a twisted humor in us singing the chorus “You make me sick” with utter bliss, but such is the power of music. Brigetta channels love and heartbreak with effortless charm, reminding us that it’s when we’re vulnerable and true to ourselves that we feel truly alive.
