We can all look back at a moment in our lives where someone makes us feel more beautiful, more seen, and more warm – and that is exactly the feeling I wanted to turn into a song.
For all the ways love makes us feel, sometimes it leaves us at a total loss for words.
Call it emotional overload, call it infatuation intoxication; blame the English language, or blame the human brain. There’s no right way to express ourselves or the way we feel, and there’s no easy way to capture love’s enormous impact. Part of its beauty is that it hits differently all the time – a truth that’s paved the way for thousands of love songs to coexist, each one capturing another facet of someone else’s lived experiences with love.
Still, sometimes the words don’t come and we’re left totally speechless – or the words we come up with just aren’t enough! When all else fails us, indie pop band flor remind us that we can always turn to the ways in which love itself makes us feel – and one thing we can all agree on is the pure light love brings into our lives. flor celebrate love’s endless warmth, wonder, and beauty in their spirited song “Same Color as the Sun,” a radiant, revelrous anthem of desire and passion.
They say, blinded by love can’t end well
you see, all that I want is you next to me
darkness or light would be fine
the more I let go,
the more that I know that I
would be better off blind
and in love than alone
Can I come hang with you baby
my sheets make me crazy
wish you were never gone
the vacant space that you leave
is so hard to please
it begs on its knees for ya
how did you get my world to spin again
I feel the wind again
I can’t describe what you are to me to anyone
does it make sense if I say
Same color as the sun
Love shines its light on all of us, and in turn, flor have shone a light on love. Released back in October via ENCI Records, “Same Color as the Sun” is flor’s only single of 2023 and the band’s first single since releasing their third album Future Shine in mid-2022. “Buoyant and bold, catchy and cathartic, the stadium-sized Future Shine is all hits and no misses: A record that burns bright with an irresistibly infectious, radiant glow,” Atwood Magazine wrote of the album in a 2022 feature, going on to call it an instant classic: “It’s the kind of music that hits hard and fast, enchanting the ears while inspiring the heart at the same time… an undeniable success.”
“Same Color as the Sun” is an emphatic return for flor, and one that finds the trio of Zach Grace (vocals, guitar), Dylan Bauld (bass), and Kyle Hill (drums) reveling in the beauty and warmth of intimate connection. Even if they can’t quite pin down all that they want to say, they still manage to express it with the simple, stirring refrain, “I can’t describe what you are to me to anyone. Does it make sense if I say, same color as the sun?“
So starry-eyed
can’t tell if I’m living inside of a dream
hazy at the edges but clear in-between
focusing in on you, on you
Can I come hang with you baby
my sheets make me crazy
wish you were never gone
the vacant space that you leave
is so hard to please
it begs on its knees for ya
how did you get my world to spin again
I feel the wind again
I can’t describe what you are to me to anyone
does it make sense if I say
Same color as the sun
“‘Same Color As The Sun’ started as a lovesick love song,” flor’s Zach Grace tells Atwood Magazine. “I started writing it as my partner was leaving Hood River to go and work in Los Angeles. In a TikTok video on our account you can see a rough lyrical idea that didn’t end up making the cut, but inspired the start of the chorus.”
“Love songs have felt so good to write recently, but I was finding myself unable to capture the emotion I wanted with the right lyrics. So I asked myself, ‘How would you describe this massive emotion without ever finding these perfect words?‘ That quickly became the focus of the song, and shifted this lovesick ballad into an anthem of rampant desire.”
“I still can’t describe exactly what being the ‘same color as the sun’ makes a person, but I think we can all look back at a moment in our lives where someone makes us feel more beautiful, more seen, and more warm – and that is exactly the feeling I wanted to turn into a song.”
flor recently injected even more life into their new song with a vivid live music video created in partnership with Betawave Media Group, recorded at the same studio space that initially brought the song to life. It’s a behind-the-curtains, up-close look at the indie pop trio’s raw passion and visceral energy, and one that speaks to the charm, the euphoria, and the deep affection at the heart of their (at the risk of sounding too corny) sun-soaked song.
From its achingly intimate lyrics to the band’s vibrant, emphatic instrumental work and Zach Grace’s vulnerable and impassioned vocal performance, “Same Color as the Sun” is a cinematic, kind-hearted, and soul-stirring reverie: A love song that, despite being at a loss for words, ultimately finds the right words to say at exactly the right time.
I want you in everything
every smile and every place
every refresh every page
make me blind cause you are
the same color as the sun
