“Don’t Talk About It” – Sorcha Richardson

A pleasant lie is often easier to digest than an uncomfortable truth, no matter how bad the repercussions may be. Ireland-based singer-songwriter Sorcha Richardson dives into this theme with a warm twist on her latest single “Don’t Talk About It.” It explores the miscommunications of a failing love and the reluctance to look oneself in the face and ask “am I truly happy?”

Don’t Talk About It – Sorcha Richardson

The track starts with Richardson’s silky vocals that begin the story. Surrounding the vocals are pop-infused guitar melodies that have a retro throwback vibe attached to them, adding a distinct piece of flair to an already glamorous single. She continues her story, lamenting as she sings “and you’re too scared to tell me how you really feel right now.” A somber sentiment, but Richardson grabs what could have been a forlorn track into one that inspires hope as she continues forward.

Ay okay, we don’t have to talk about it
It’s only love, I guess we’ll live without it
Ay okay, we don’t have to talk about it
It’s only love, It’s only love

It’s a song about avoiding conflict and trying to keep the peace, no matter how much you end up sacrificing in order to do so,” Richardson explains in a statement. “Sometimes it feels much easier to convince yourself that you’re happy in a relationship, or in a city, or in a job, than to admit to yourself that you’re not, and to have to drag that problem out the light and deal with it. But that never works, and when you leave a problem alone, 99% of the time it just grows and grows until you can’t ignore it. I’ve learned that lesson the hard way, more than once.”

She continues, stating “this is a song about what you end up losing when you smile and hold your tongue, but also what an achievement it is when you do learn to confront a situation that scares you.” Her attitude and acknowledgment about the strength needed to face these fears are admirable, and that positivity is present throughout the melody of the track as a whole. As she sings and dives further into this story of a failing relationship, her warm presence and uplifting rhythms make smiling an almost guaranteed and fantastic side-effect from listening.

Watch: “Don’t Talk About It (Lyric Video)” – Sorcha Richardson

I don’t know maybe it’s already happening
I came downstairs, saw the flames licking the ceiling
Just paint the walls white a couple more times
Tell myself I got nothing to show
And you’re just radio silence my love
Where did you go

As the track begins to come to its close, synths enter the mix with a lush sound that provides a gorgeous musical dynamic. With a faint, delicate voice, Richardson begins her final verse. “I just thought that you and I would dream a little bigger. Don’t you ever feel that way too?” With her closing question asked, the final chorus then begins, reaching a beautiful crescendo of vocals, guitar, synths, and percussion that finishes this story with a lovely exclamation point.

Sorcha Richardson has made a difficult topic of discussion into a roaring anthem of empowerment and hope with “Don’t Talk About It,” showcasing her musical and lyrical abilities with distinguished grace. No matter how difficult an obstacle may be, it’s clear that Richardson believes in us all to make the right call. Listeners can expect to hear more from Richardson when her debut album, First Prize Bravery, releases later this year.
