Watch: “Danny, Dakota & the Wishing Well” – A Silent Film
[youtube=http://youtu.be/jktx9Ro60cI?t=0s]Hailing off their 2012 sophomore album Sand & Snow, “Danny, Dakota & the Wishing Well” is the first song I heard from A Silent Film. Robert Stevenson and Spencer Walker are powerful songwriters and storytellers, not to mention creative musicians with an anthemic bent.
Speaking of anthemic, A Silent Film is coming back strong in 2015: Last Tuesday, the band released the single “Tomorrow” off their upcoming 4-track EP New Year. The late-April EP release will coincide with a twelve-city American tour – the “Secret Rooms Tour” – that will find A Silent Film performing in private, intimate settings in the country’s biggest cities.
In addition to all this, the band has also set the release of their third full-length album for Fall 2015 – so that’s happening.
Bottom line: 2015 is an anthemic year for A Silent Film, and what better way to portray that than with an anthemic song as well? “Tomorrow” is most certainly all that, and more: A heavy keyboard/synth-driven track, the song centers around the repetition of the phrase, “Pray for a chance to prove yourself tomorrow.” It’s a song vaguely about renewal and change: The lyrics are abstract enough for it to be applied to most any situation, whether it’s a breakup, a new beginning, the shitstorm that was 2014… you name it!
“Tomorrow” can be politically-driven if you want it to be: With few award shows left to put famous artists onscreen singing “Glory” and making wry comments about white privilege in America, the remainder of 2015 is certainly going to be in need of a couple battle cries. Could this be one?
Let’s look at the facts: A Silent Film’s forthcoming EP is called New Year. The cover art features a hand holding a peeled-back orange (not sure how deep we want to get into the imagery here), and EP’s other songs are entitled “Paralysed,” “Strong Enough” and “Message in the Sand.” Extrapolate from there.
Pray for a chance to prove yourself tomorrow.
This is the kind of timely, relevant music we all wish U2 had put out late last year. “Tomorrow” should have come yesterday. The song’s structure marks a turn for the band’s time-tested, listener-approved storytelling style of songwriting, and that’s okay because it’s still them, it still sounds like them, and it’s got enough depth and power to prove that A Silent Film is ready to make some noise.
