Many of us are fascinated by the world of astrology.

Certain astrological signs evoke ideas of how a person may be. A Leo may try to remain in the spotlight, while a Gemini may have two sides to their personality, Capricorns possess unwavering ambition, and so forth. TRISHES’ eclectic song “Astrology” explores two juxtaposing perspectives: Her close friend Doe Paoro looks to the stars for answers, while her mother seeks solace in Jesus and the Catholic Church.

Trinidadian-American Trish Hosein is the brainchild behind TRISHES. An Atwood Magazine Editor’s Pick, her distinct sound fuses hydrating, hip-hop beats with fierce pop hooks. Through things like spoken word and special vocal effects, her music magically comes to life. TRISHES’ bold messages capture human existence brilliantly. Each release touches on Freud’s constructs of self (the primal, conscious, and spiritual), and her latest offering dives deep into a mystical and spiritual realm.

With unique vocal looping, fuzzy bass, and hip-hop drums, there is an organic intensity to “Astrology” that is wholly tantalizing. Lines like, “I call my mom and ask her for the exact minute I was born” could not be more relatable; to figure out your moon sign, you need to know the time of your birth. Somehow if we guess, it doesn’t feel as accurate – and so we rush to call a parent.

TRISHES goes on to explain her friend mapping out the night her life began. “My mother passes rosary beads like rings of Saturn around her hand,” she sings. Those words conjure stunning imagery, further connecting to the concept of planets aligning.

As TRISHES examines the contrasts between her mother and friend, she comes to a profound conclusion.

They may not be so different after all. TRISHES shares, “They have both created little shrines in their homes that look oddly similar, with portraits and prayers and candles and remnants of me. More importantly, they have both helped guide me through life.”

“Astrology” is an enlightening ode seamlessly capturing each of their essences.
