We’re all just trying to get it right, aren’t we? Striving to be our best selves every day, while steadily learning what that means and hoping we fall upward over time. To quote the band Rush quoting William Shakespeare, All the world’s indeed a stage, we are merely players: All we can do is try, try, try, in the hopes that we eventually find our pocket, find our groove, and enjoy la dolce vita. Atlanta indie rockers Tedo Stone embrace this sentiment while embarking on a dirty funk trip fantasia (their words) on “Keeping It Tight,” the band’s smoldering first single of the year.

Keeping It Tight – Tedo Stone
Oh boy its back again
I seen it myself
what’s going on in my mind
Walking tall a free for all
the stars are aligned
to let yourself unwind
I believe it’s up to me to tell me myself
to welcome me back to my life
If you believe it don’t matter what’s in front
if you can leave the past back where it came from
You will see

Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering “Keeping It Tight,” a dynamic and churning song of self-discovery and finding inner peace – all while enjoying life’s little moments along the way. The lead single off Tedo Stone’s forthcoming fifth LP (details TBD) sees the band in tight form, employing some of that sage wisdom that only comes to us with time and life experience.

Active for over ten years, Tedo Stone consists of frontman and songwriter (and namesake) Tedo Stone, Drew Beskin, Phillip Brantley, and Matt Martin. Over their tenure – one that spans four high-energy LPs and a slew of EPs and singles – the band have embraced a wide range of styles and inspirations within the umbrella “indie rock” realm, dipping their toes deep into psychedelia, garage, funk, and more, while holding nothing back in the process. Their hottest offering since 2020’s Same Old Kid, “Keeping It Tight” is utterly alluring: A searing “Spoon meets some old school funk” track, per the band’s own words.

A heated funk-fueled rock groove sets the pace as Stone croons, his voice laden with light effects that add to a sense of tension, fervor, and sweet release. The vocalist lets loose on a spirited chorus:

Getting it right
I see the light now baby
Keeping it Tight
Getting my life back baby

The song’s message is simple; getting there – to that headspace; to that place in your life – is the hardest part.

For Stone and co, this song heralds something of a new era for the band.

“We have been sitting on our fifth record for a little while,” Tedo Stone tells Atwood Magazine. “We’ll be releasing it next year, but I wanted to get a track out before the end of the year because it’s been too long. ‘Keeping It Tight’ is one of the most fun songs I have in my arsenal. Fun is what our live sets are about and what we strive for as a band of old dudes. This song was written over several months. I had a slower version demo’d that I sent to Drew (Beskin, guitar/keys/producer), who sent me back a version with his input.”

“For a while we would just talk about what kind of song this could be. We were very influenced by Hot Chocolate’s ‘Every 1s a Winner’ during that time, and we were aiming to go to a dirty funk trip fantasia sort of place. We knew we had something special with this song even though it wasn’t fully complete when it came time to record. We took it into the studio with Matt (Martin drums, bass, producer, engineer) who put his own spin on it. We were writing lyrics on the fly and drawing influences from INXS and SPOON (maybe a little Backstreet Boys too) as the track continued to take shape. The result is three friends having an amazing time in the studio. It has become one of our favorite tracks to play live too. “

If you believe it don’t matter what’s in front
If you can the leave the past back where it came from
If you can see that right now is what you want
You will see
I believe it’s up to me to tell me myself
to welcome me back to my lie

We may not be able to “flip the switch” and get it right right away, but we’re always trying – and now, Tedo Stone have given us a soundtrack to our never-ending quest for that good life. Stream “Keeping It Tight” exclusively on Atwood Magazine and stay tuned for more blistering indie rock as Tedo Stone begin to unravel their upcoming fifth LP, out in 2023!
